I'm helping my brother out with a new monitor. He's currently using a 40" 1080p slow TV, so anything more appropriate for PC gaming will be an upgrade.

However, he isn't really sure what format he wants. These are the options I've presented, keeping to a budget of roughly <£250:

  • 2560x1440p (16:9) 60 Hz ~27"
  • 2560x1080p (21:9) 60 Hz ~29"
  • 1920*1080p (16:9) 144 Hz ~24/27"

He has an i5-4460 and an R9 290 overclocked to ~stock 290X. Tends to play RPG, FPS, RTS - so a bit of a mixture really.

I've explained the pros and cons of high res vs. ultrawide vs. high refresh rate, shown him some benchmarks, and advised him to try looking at some in store to see what he prefers.

I wondered if anyone has any personal opinions on what you'd prefer from these, and why?

a 34" 21:9 is the same as a 27" 16:9 in the height of the display a 29 will obviously be smaller still probably around the 24" mark if things cant run in 21:9 wide mode.

so for me id go 27" but then addition to this what else will teh screen be used for i use mine for ps4 and a small bit of tv streaming
