I'm after a laptop to replace my Alienware M11x, since I don't need to game while at uni, I've got the desktop for that. I'd like a larger screen, but it has to have a higher resolution than the 1366x768 of the M11x, for more working area.

Ideally it'd have something like an i5 460M or i3 370M or better, and be fairly portable. It doesn't have to be uber lightweight, but good battery life (at least 3 hours) is a must.

Budget is around £550, and I'm not averse to refurbished. Does such a laptop exist? I'm having a hard time finding much if anything...

(I have found some nice refurbished Sony Vaio E-series laptops, with 1920x1080, 15" screens, but I suspect the battery life would be poor).

Most cheap laptops come with that crappy resolution. Dell does the XPS 15 with a high res screen as well (1080p), but £550 is a big ask really. You will have more chance with a 17'', although they are most likely using a 1600 x 900 resolution. And.... Not exactly portable.

If you do find a 14'' with a good res for under £600 and good battery life, I'd love to hear about it! :)

That's what I feared to be honest, looks like it's 17" for a high resolution, or I have to cough up a ton of money. Oh well...
