High Ryzen 3600 temps on MSI X470 Gaming Plus

Hi, I recently got my new Ryzen build going, and ran a quick AIDA64 test and the boost kicked in to 4.2ghz, but the temps immediately hit 90C. This reduced the clock speeds to 4ghz, but still 80C. The speeds would then fluctuate between 3.8-4Ghz while hovering around 80C.

I've only run WoW so far, and had 51C running at 30% CPU usage which seems okay, but the 80-90C constant temps seems a bit high to me?

I'm using the stock cooler with Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut, but before I consider a new cooler, I want to make sure there's no weird settings to check in my BIOS (I'm running latest as of today), or if I should consider undervolting (how do I undervolt? Never had to change voltages before).

I'm coming from an overclock 3570k with a CM Hyper 212 Evo that could keep it steady at 4.4ghz under 65C at all times, so 80-90 feels very high. The monitored temps are coming from both MSI Afterburner and Ryzen Master.
 
yea, those temps do seem high. I dont use the stock-cooler but at 90c+ ill be a little worried. Temps like that could be caused by bad thermal-paste application (it would have to be bad, which you probably didnt do), high voltages from your MB or poor cooler (surely the stock cooler isnt that bad?)... or a combination of things, like a weak/average cooler with high voltages. Use something like Ryzen master to see what the stock voltage is.

It doesnt help much, but im using a 3900x (stock) on a 280mm AIO, and peak at around 60ish. I would have thought a 3600 would be easier to cool than 3900x, although AIO would help. Sorry I cant help more, maybe someone else can :)

I'm fairly sure I remember the voltages being around 1.3-1.35v. I'll check tomorrow.

It could be the paste because that cooler was a ...... to install so the cooler moved about a lot during installation. Maybe I'll redo it as well now I have more just to be sure!

Ive built pcs for many years and never had a problem with cpu coolers, apart from push-pin coolers. I though it was installed correctly but wasnt - temps spiked. So maybe it could be the cooler not sitting correctly? Check how hot the heatsink is when the cpu is hot. If the cooler is cold, then its not sitting correctly or too much paste (ie. the cpu is struggling to get the heat away). Id would think its more likey to be that.
 
The Wraith Stealth that comes with the 3600 really isn't very good. Those temperatures don't seem anything too out of the ordinary based on what I've seen. Hardware Unboxed for example found that theirs settled at around 80 degrees and 4GHz out of the box, which isn't too far off where you are (and voltages/boost behaviour can vary a fair bit between motherboards). AMD would say it's perfectly safe of course, since you're below the thermal throttling temperature, but almost any aftermarket cooler will drop your temperatures considerably and likely allow you to boost to the full 4.2GHz constantly, whilst also being much quieter.
 
So... Update: I tried undervolting and set a -0.05v offset. By default it was running around 1.4v to 1.45v. since applying the offset, it only boosts to 4ghz, but it runs at 60C!!

From here I'll try incrementing the voltage to see if I can hit 4.2ghz at a sensible temperature.
 
I get better temps on mine running a 4.2ghz all core OC @ 1.325v then stock and its also 100 points up in cinebench.

Also a really cheap option for a cooler is the wraith max on OCUK for £12.95, it's pretty much the same as the wraith prism which I have on my 3600 and it keeps temps below 70c at max load.

What motherboard have you got? I'm finding my Ryzen so much harder to get right than my old i5... My 3570k went straight to 4.4ghz with stock voltage. Google is just confusing me the more I research with the Ryzen...

B450 tomahawk max.

I think 80-90c is pretty standard with the stock cooler and the voltage is perfectly safe at 1.5v for single core and 1.325v for all core loads, it's just how the boost algorithm works on these CPUs.

If you're going to be doing a lot of stuff that uses all cores at 100% then I would recomend a better cooler but if it's just some light use and gaming then the stock cooler will do the job fine.

look at the cool & quiet option, its usually on [Auto] but i had to change [Enabled] that dropped voltage/cooling down a lot.

i also run a voltage offset at -0.100v

I came on looking for similar advice!

I found the same when installing this cooler, it slid about while I was trying to attach the MB bracket from the underside etc!

Only just installed windows and core temp shows it idle at about 45c?

Not tried a game yet

I haven't a clue where to start but I saw a post mentioning changing the power setting in windows from performance to balanced can help etc?

Also wonder if the fans are functioning correctly
 
I think I have the same motherboard - if you have activated Game Boost in the bios then that's why voltage is at 1.45v. Disable game boost and do the overclock yourself. I've had the board for about a year or so now, with a 2700x. I'm not fussed about overclocking but recently dabbled with that setting and soon disabled it.
