hi guys,
i am going to be buying a new big rig and a laptop for photo and video editing. They will both need to run software like photoshop and adobe premiere etc.

I have the spec for my big rig, thanks to the guys in the general hardware section but now i need a really good laptop.

It must have

wifi
gigabite ethernet
firewire
at least 4gb of ram
good graphics card

budget is £1100, could maybe push it to £1200 if the spec is right.

what do you guys think???

Well for starters if you are doing video editing, you would want one with a graphics engine that would suit your needs. We would be talking about a nVidia Quadro FX. Also a large decent screen is needed.

After a quick search, take a look at the Dell Precision range.

New Dell Precision M2300 would be my choice at the moment, I'm going to try and talk my boss into getting me one tomorrow. Only a 14" screen but if you have a desktop I can't see the point in a 17" brick you'll never be bothered to take beyond your front door because it's so damn heavy!

for photoshop and video editing you will see no difference between a low end or high end graphics card - purely cpu intensive tasks. Also make sure you get a fast hdd as this will be the major bottleneck for video editing - if a laptop has an e-sata port this would help immensely as you could run a high speed high capacity desktop drive external to the laptop.
