Purchased a new build from here at xmas, spec as below
  • AMD Ryzen 9 3900X Twelve Core 4.6GHz (Socket AM4) Processor
  • Asus ROG Crosshair VIII Hero (AMD AM4) DDR4 X570 Chipset ATX Motherboard
  • Corsair Hydro Series H100i Platinum RGB Performance Liquid Cooler
  • Team Group Night Hawk RGB 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 PC4-25600C16 3200MHz
  • Asus GeForce RTX 2080 Ti ROG Strix OC 11264MB GDDR6 PCI-Express Graphics Card
  • WD Blue 3D NAND 250GB M.2 2280 Solid State Drive
  • Samsung 1TB 860 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps 64 Layer 3D V-NAND Solid State Drive
  • Super Flower Leadex II 1000W 80 Plus Gold Modular Power Supply
Since then all i have done is installed steam, all my driving sims and peripherals (steering wheel, shifter, pedals, handbrake and Vive)... (EDIT: and updated gfx drivers)
  • Since the first time ive turned it on its always appears to be slow for the spec it is, 22 secs to post screen, 45 secs to login screen, tried removing all USB devices and it appears to speed the boot process up by roughly 1 sec. almost twice as long as my old I7 system.
  • Occasionally (roughly once a day) it will fail to post completely (always from cold boot), the fans kick in, gpu and mb light up but it doesn't post regardless of how long i leave it.
  • Restarting can take over 1min even if i restart almost immediately after logging in.
  • Shutting down can also take over 1min under same circumstances.
  • Occasionally the game controllers window will stop responding and "commonshell.dll" will stop working meaning i have to restart computer to access thrustmaster/fanatec profiler software etc
if it makes any difference i have noticed some other strange behaviour, im using a triple screen set up occasionally my post screen will be on RHS screen other times on the middle, i also moved my desktop icons to the middle screen, they seemed to move back to the LHS screen on their own (auto arrange is off) but occasionally i will boot it up and my icons will be on the middle screen how i arranged them.

MB Bios version is 0702 which whilst isn't the latest according to Asus website it should fully support 3900x, a friend suggested turning CSM off which i tried but made 0 difference to boot times.

Am i expecting too much? if need be i can live with the slow boots its the failure to boot and commonshell problems which annoy me the most. especially considering this was professionally built a month ago and cost nearly £3k

Any idea's?

Slow boot and especially failing from cold boot could be memory settings related.

Also just trying getting to BIOS with minimal parts connected would be one thing to try and then attaching only OS drive.
Though unless there was only one drive connected during installation of Windows, boot sector could be on wrong drive needing both drives to boot.
(Microsoft's installer is pos)

I had similar issues with slowboot on an am4 setup with the occasional failure to boot, I would have to go into bios then back out making no changes at times then it would boot.

I thought all of these issues had been ironed out in the later generations of Ryzen/newer chipsets, but they sound identical. I too had an Asus crosshair board.

If you set the memory to the default it wants to boot at does it have any impact? IE leave it at 2666mhz not using docp etc.

Thanks for the replies, i will update bios and look into memory settings later when im at home after work. will report here with my findings

i had a similar problem with a recent 2nd ryzen build, but after a while (around 2 month's) i had multiple fail to boots and really odd behavor in winodws which always lead to bsod, i narrowed it down to ram, i did testing and found one stick was faulty, something to note my kit wasnt on the qvl list, but a replacment set fixed the odd issues i had and now my nephews pc is brilliant.

i'll just check your manual online and check the ram is on the qvl list.

EDIT just looked now on the qvl list for you mobo and the 3200mhz kit you have isnt supported, there is a 3600mhz kit which is, as other above have said try updating your bios as that may improve memory compatibility. If the updated bios dsotn fix the odd issues i'd say test your ram one stick at a time just to rule out a bad stick

I've updated bios, chipset drivers, audio drivers, turned CSM on and sorted the ram speed out.

Post time is 10seconds quicker now but more importantly the system feels a lot more stable and responsive. Still testing but since making these changes i havent had a single case of boot faliure or my dreaded commonshell problem.

Still takes an absolute age to restart (1-2 mins) and not much better to shut down but i can live with that

Phew, good thing its more stable and responsive, as im gonna have similar parts to your build.

Built a B450 Tomahawk + 3700X system in December with latest BIOS and other than the very first time (when it was training the RAM or whatever) it booted and restarted super fast.

WD Blue 3D NAND 250GB M.2 2280 Solid State Drive

just out of intrest is the above a true blue m.2 drive?, just did a quck search and it looks like this drive isnt a nvme drive as it only has 550mb read and 520mb write speeds compared to a m.2 nvme which sould be around 3000mb read and over 2000mb write

is this your drive, notice the gold connector, this isn't a true m.2 drive as the speeds are sata based

below is a nvme m.2 drive see the gold connector is diffrent, plus the speeds are insanly fast

dont get me wrong the pc will work as you've said above it just wont be as fast as it could be, may explain the slow shutdowns, due to the boot drive you have

Got a 3600 in that board and see same as you no issues. It's concerning that the OP has exactly the same issues I saw with the older revision of the board with Ryzen tho.

Arh damn that may explain it, i picked it from a drop down list on the system configurator and the spec i posted is copy and pasted from my order page. Any recommendations for a faster one? only has to be big enough for O/S etc, as i install my games on the SSD.

The only way that drive could be causing those issues was if it was faulty. That it's not NVME has nothing to do with 1-2 minute restarts, etc.

Yeah, there is definetly something not right as even an old HDD shouldnt take much over a minute.

Do you have another drive you could test?

i dont have another m.2 drive to test unfortunately. is there anyway to test it or should i contact overclockers?

You dont have any dodgy Asus sofware thats runs in the background do you ?

it had Aura, ICUE and Ryzen master installed from overclockers and iirc some utilities installed when i ran the second set of chipset drivers but it took just as long as before i installed those so im ruling those out.

when i press restart or shutdown it will say restart/shutdown on the screen and the circle will keep spinning for 1-2mins before the computer shuts off / restarts

You should definitely contact Overclockers UK. They may even know the issue and fix already if it's popped up in the past with similar hardware and you might not have to send it back.

if others have said the the drive shouldn't be the issue, then something is a miss with your build, personally i'd say it is the drive, sata vs nvme speeds are completly diffrent dont forget 550mb vs 3500mb read, and 520mb vs 2300mb write is a huge diffrence, thats gen3, if your taliking about gen 4 ssd's its even quicker.

Just a quick question which m.2 slot on the motherboard are you using for the m.2 sata drive you have?.

regarding drive choice i've never gone wrong with samsung drives, so a 250gb 970 evo m.2 from overclockers will set you back £68.99 exc shipping, you have got over 100 posts so shipping should be free.

I have swapped over to a corsair mp600 gen 4 drive (500gb smallest version) and holy cow this thing is brutally quick, makes gen 3 drives look slow in comparison, only downside is they can run warm and do cost a bit more £119.99 :( from overclockers

at the end of the day if overclockers built your machine they will be able to give you all the support and options IF anything needs to be changed
