High Temps on Q6600:(

My Q6600 idles at 50 on all 4 cores and I'm now at a loss as to what else I can do to improve things.

Its water cooled with a Swiftech Apogee GT running through a Black ICE GT Stealth 240 Rad. The pump is a DDC-1T Pro and I'm using 7/16 Masterkleer tubing. The loop also cools the Maximus Extreme NB block btw.

The CPU is ofcourse running at 3.6, but surely it should be running cooler than that?

Whats odd though is when I run Everest, the single CPU temp is around 42-45 (approx 10deg lower than the individual temps of the 4 cores)

Any help would be appreciated.

Providing you've used the minimum of thermal paste, it's probably your block. The GT wasn't really designed for quads. It's predecessor (the Storm) actually works better with quads.

But, idling at 50c at 3.6ghz isn't too bad. What's your load temps, as they are what really matter.

Have you lapped the CPU yet?

I've just done this to my Q6600 today and its made a massive difference to the temps.

They've dropped by 12C on load, this is air cooling aswell.

May be worth a shot!

Hi

When running Prime 95, the cores can reach 90deg, which is NOT COOL;)

I've taken the block off today and re-applied with the typical "grain of rice" size of AS5 and smoothed it all over evenly.

In answer to your question EvelFranky, no I've not lapped it. Kind of been a little hesitant tbh.

What water block should I look at instead then?

In addition, should I use my spare Thermochill PA120.3 rad, or should the Blackice still be sufficient?

TIA

If you've a 120.3 then get it out. The GT Stealth is designed more for small spaces than taking the heat from a clocked quad.

Block wise, the D-Tek Fuzion v2 and the EK Supreme are great with quads. The new XSPC Edge is meant to be sound with them too.

What's your voltage in Windows for 3.6ghz?

Here you go

I've still got an issue with the PC where if I leave it alone, it hangs and sometimes when gaming it also hangs, so something ain't happy! I know its not the RAM though as I've run MEMTEST and thats perfectly stable

What vcore are you using in the bios?

I run the swiftech Apex Kit with a Apogee waterblock and my load temps never went above 70c full load even at 3.8ghz with 1.55vcore with Q6600.

Even at 3.6ghz temps never went above 60c full load with 1.5v

Look at making sure you block is seated correctly...

I'm stunned how much cooler yours is running then. The only other thing is if the BIOS is reporting it differently.... stranger things have happened!

Here's a pic of mine from some time ago. I've since got rid of the two 2900's!

Well I've stripped the pc apart tonight and I think I've found the culprit. The clip that holds the CPU in place is bent in the centre obviously to provide a tight grip. However the bend angles the bracket to such an extent that it prevents the waterblock from seating correctly! God knows how this happened but I'll take a hammer to the bracket tomorrow and flatten it out!

Good luck! :)
