High temps.

I setup my HTPC today, Asus P5Q-EM and a E5200 with a passive scythe ninja (using MX-2 thermal paste). I thought I best check the temps in windows (bios reads 23.5c), and in everest 4.60 and coretemp 0.99.4 my temps seem a little high.

Everest:

CPU: 23c
Core 1: 55 idle (doesn't change when watching 1080p)
Core 2: 37 idle (41 when watching 1080p)

Core Temp:

Core 0: 55 (doesn't change when watching 1080p)
Core 1: 37 (41 when watching 1080p)

Is it possible that the first temp in each app is just stuck at 55c? Should I be worried?

If I watch the same 1080p on my main PC (E6750 w/ arctic freezer 7), both my cores in everest change from 32-33c to about 42c.

Looks like you've got a stuck sensor, which unfortunately you can't do anything to fix.

One thing you might be able to try...the sensors have a minimum range which is not below 50, so if you get past 50 degrees, you might be able to 'unstick' it. Worth a shot maybe.

Cheers guys. I had considered reseating the heatsink (but would rather not!!). I will run everests torture test when I get home from work and see if that budges the other sensor.

If running everest torture test doesn't do anything, I think I will remove the heatsink and clear the thermal paste and put some more stuff down, and use a freezer bag to spread it over the core evenly, rather than the "line" technique.

I tell thee I am not looking forward to removing the mini minja with the mobo still in the case (too much effort to remove the mobo from case).

If it's a stuck sensor, like I think it is, then your thermal paste application won't do anything to solve it lol. Just assume that your cores are within a degree or two of eachother under when stressed evenly, and you can still effectively monitor your temperatures...

I kinda just wanted to rule out the heatsink being an issue though. I haven't bothered to take it off as I have ran everest staibilty test for 15mins, the core that does changed didn't go above 45c, the other stayed at 55c. I am gonna let it run for an hour or too now just to see what sort of temp it will get to in my HTPC case.

Thanks again for your help :)

Here are some pics of my HTPC (sitting on other desk atm waiting to go under TV):

Installed the 4 pin CPU power cable under the motherboard to keep it out of harms way!
