Hi all,

bought a 2Ghz Macbook with a gig of ram and 80 gig HD when they first came out, and have not put the thing down since. I was always a Windows user, but now find I couldn't go back (Were it not for the fact I need to use it at work!).
I was looking at getting an iMac to finally complete me transition to Apple fanboi, but was looking at prices and am considering making the macbook a bit more beefy!
Basically, I was wondering about sticking a 250gb drive in there, upping the RAM to 2GB and getting a 24" monitor.
Does anyone think "Waste of money", or do you reckon this could be a workable desktop replacement? I don't game, so figure the graphics will be sufficient for my needs.
Specced a few bits from OCUK, and I can get it all under 500 quid, the Samsung SM-245B, Western Digital Scorpio 250GB drive and 2gigs of Corsair, which I figure is probably better spent for me than the 1500ish for the top spec iMac I would want! Plus...at the end of the day, I can unplug it and take it with me!
I still haven't seen a lot of people ugrading their macbooks, so am really just looking for advice or alternatives etc!
Cheers OcUKers!

I'd go for it, the iMacs are great (I have both the MacBook and the iMac) but I'm looking to replace mine with a PC.

I'll never buy a windows laptop again but for desktop, PCs are still king.

Yep, think that's made my mind up, especially with RAM being such nice prices right now!
I figure the extra speed boost of the 2.8 is only really going to effect me in terms of I do a bit of video encoding and that would probably be about it.

Cheers for the advice people!

Ok that makes no sense...unless you mean for Gaming on your desktop?

I just mean general bang for buck on the desktop. The MacBooks are resonably priced compared to Windows laptops and I never feel like I'm compromising to use OS X.

The Mac desktops on the other hand are quite overpriced for what they are on paper. Its horses for courses afterall, but for my needs I wont be buying a Mac desktop again. I'll save a lot of money and use linux first.

I'd rather use a Mac Desktop as going back to Windows after using OS X makes me feel a little unclean. ;)

Also I don't think the desktops are massivley overpriced for what you get especially design wise...

Mostly there!
Got the RAM and the monitor, waiting on the 250gig drive.
There is only a slight (but noticable) difference from the 1 to 2 gb RAM upgrade. Really most noticable when running parallels and things like Photoshop, seems a bit more responsive and fluid swapping between apps.
As for the monitor....my god.....1920 X 1200 on a 24" is MAHOOOSIVE!
The girlfriend is gonna go mad when she comes in and sees this! She knew I was upgrading, but don't think she quite realised how big the screen would be!
Just annoying to be waiting for the HD. That was the bit that would probably make most difference to me, constantly having to move bits to the network at the moment, just not enough space!

This rawks!
