Just had a look at the CPU cooler...one corner has a piece of plastic snapped off, meaning it was not making proper contact with the CPU. I got rid of the broken off piece and pushed it in again but I suspected it'd just come out once the PC had been put upright again. Also, the TIM has probably evaporated by now. True enough, temperatures are still way too high - 50 C when idle and shoot up to 90+ C once a game is launched.
Bought a replacement CPU cooler, should arrive tomorrow and I can replace it. I just hope the CPU hasn't been irreparably damaged running so hot for so long. If it has, I guess I'll be looking for a second hand 2500K/2700K/3570K/3770K soon!
