Highest External Screen Resolution: Mid2010 MBP?

What is the highest resolution I can display from a MacBook Pro onto an external monitor and what cable would I need to do this? I have a 27" Dell monitor that goes silly resolutions and wondered if my MacBook Pro can display at these levels?

From memory if the Dell has a DP-input then it should be a direct connection
