I have a Q9650 cpu on a 775 motherboard. 8gb ram. I currently have a 560ti gfx card as I'm only a casual (but quite avid) gamer.

Would a 970 be overkill for this system? 960 looks like the sweet spot but if a 970 won't be bottle necked it might keep my system happily gaming for a year or two more. Or should I look at something else?

I want to stay with NVidia and I'll prob be looking to buy second hand, after the 10xx series are out.

If you plan to play DX12 games, I would advice you to get an AMD one. Your CPU ain't going to be a bottle neck then and all their cards are far superior to NV for their price brackets.

However I do not see how you will benefit with a better card on DX11 or earlier, games. Because your CPU is the bottleneck there.

Get the best you can for the money you want to pay from the brand you want, I feel some second hand bargains are due.

Ps don't take panos too seriously he just likes Amd a lot.

i think you should wait a month or so for the second hand bargains. you should be able to pick up a cheap 970 or maybe a 290 and even though it might be bottlenecked, you will be getting way more fps than you are now. i have tested a q8300 with a 7850, 7870 and a fury x and i was amazed how well it handled all 3 gpus. it was pretty much flat out trying to feed to fury, but there was still a decent fps increase over the 7870.
