Just got a quick question for you guys. Is it alright to do HIIT training first thing in the morning? I've heard it can reduce your muscle mass some how. Was wondering if this is true or just a myth. I currently do about a 3 mile run 1st thing in the morning and want to switch up my routine by adding HIIT training every other day.

I think it's fine mate. It *wont* reduce your muscle mass any more than steady state cardio. If anything I don't see the logic of how time of day effects its 'non existant muscle eating ability!

Just make sure it's intense enough so that you're throwing up come 20 minutes.

Your body will eat into muscle if there isn't sufficent carbs stored to supply you with enough energy. Fat is not a quick easy source of energy for the body, but muscle mass is it seems. This is from my experience, but it will be a little different for everybody depending on their genetic makeup.

HIIT is actually better for maintaining muscle mass. Trains your heart better, because you use intervals, it doesnt allow it adapt as quickly and plateau.

As long as your calorie/protein intake is high enough come the end of the day, it doesnt matter when you eat or train, you wont lose muscle/mass.

HIIT is very glycogen innefficient. When you wake your glycogen stores have been depleted through sleep. I wouldn't be doing HIIT before getting morning nutrition in, otherwise, time of day doesn't really matter :)

I wouldn't recommend going anywhere near HIIT in the morning...

I used to do mine around 5pm, 1-1 1/2 hours after a decent meal when I was cutting.

If you find you can do HIIT in the morning without any issue, you're not doing it right ;)

Some peoples' test levels peak in the AM. I do my most demanding plyometric work of the week at 7am :)

As long as you're fuelled, fired up and ready for it, then it shouldn't be a problem. CNS will be less fatigued earlier in the day too.
