I am a little out of "the know" now, and would like some advice on this setup plz, I am moving up to the vista/dx10 and DDR 3, also i'm wanting to experience better gaming for Aoc (when it comes out)and my long running EQ2. After getting some input i have been thinking about getting this lot, what ya think? any tips would be greatly appreciated:-

1, Mobo:- Asus P5e3 x48 ddr3. ( I have always had Asus boards so this one caught my eye)

2, CPU:- Intel core 2 QX 9550. ( I wanted the 9650 but thats just soo expensive lol) Also this is pre-order so duno how long it will take to come.

3, Mem:- Corsair 4gb DDR3 DHX 1600C7DHX. ( had corsair for a while and its always been ok for me)

4, Graphics:- EVGA geforce 9800GTX "SSC edition". ( Am a bit stuck on this one as they only just come out so I went for the most expensive on the theory of deaerst is best, lol. not sure if i should wait a little bit and see if any overclocked ones come out or even a ultra dunno tbh)

5, PSU:- Enermax Galaxy 1000w EGX 1000 EWL. (I read on the forums that the new 9800's need some special conection so I chose this one).


Again any hint's tips would be greatly appreciated, at mo my setup is:-

Asus P5ws64
intel core 6600 @2.4g
2gb of corsair ram
geforce 7950 GX2
Enermax 500W
win xp

DDR3 doesn't make sense right now, the price is still too high for what it is, I'd just go with a decent 4GB PC2-6400 set.

The X38 board is ok but again DDR3, why? And prolly the biggest feature over a P35 board is Crossfire mode which is a waste when you have an nvidia graphics card.

QX series CPUs are not really worth the money... I have never heard of a QX9550 but most likely it still looks bad value compared to a Q9450 (if you want a Penryn quad). Speaking of which do any of those games actually support quad cores? If they do I'd consider a Q6600 and clocking it as the price is really low in comparison or even just overclocking the E6600 (I assume E6600?) you have now.

Perhaps the best option in your case (ha ha) would be to overclock the E6600 to 3 Ghzish and just buy a new graphics card (and PSU if required). Rather than spending out on a quad and new mobo + DDR3 where it may not give you much over just a new GPU.
 
Ooops made a mistake I meant the "EVGA GeForce 9800 GX2 "SSC Edition" 1024MB GDDR3" and not the GTX..

9800GTX is a total waste of money don't even think about getting it. It is an overclocked 8800GTS which acts just like an overclocked 8800GTX. Either get a 8800GTS or look at ATI's 38** range. It seems like you want to spend a lot of money, but you really don't need to be spending that much.

As for CPU - a E8400 would probably do you best. No real need for quad (i never use all my cores), but if you really want a quad the Q6600 is probably still best value.

PSU - there is no way you are needing a 1K PSU. have a look around at people's signatures. You won't find many people with that. I'm happily running my 8800GTX and Q6600 both overclocked on a corsair HX620W. So have a look for something like that.

As tetras said: no need for DDR3, but if you are sure you could look for a board that supports both and use DDR2 for time being... but I would just stick with DDR2.

However you could probably keep your current setup and just upgrade your GFX and RAM. Possibly replace your PSU - but would probably be fine (the single GFX cards at the moment aren't needing much more power than the 7950gx2 did) Then overclock your E6600 with some 3rd party cooling like tetras said.
