Hiper Type-R 580W Problem

Hey all

I just bought an Antec P182 and am in the process of installing it. Everything was going smoothly until I plugged in and started up, and heard odd clicking noises coming from my Hiper Type-R 580W PSU. I had a look and they seemed to be coming from the rear 80MM fan.

I turned off and had a closer look, and now it seems to be stuck completely. If I give it a push it spins for a second or two but then gets jammed again.

Is there anything I can do about it? Could I open up the PSU and see if there's anything rubbing off the fan, or is that a major no-no?

I know everyone will probably tell me to get rid of the Hiper, but it's been running rock solid for me and I wouldn't mind keeping it if it's just a problem with the fan.

Thanks

I generally avoid opening up power supplies, touch the wrong thing and it could be a bit dangerous!

PK!

I did a bit more fiddling and if I hold the plastic fan cover out just a tiny bit, the fan spins perfectly. I'm tempted to open it up and see if there's anything I can do to get it to hold that way. I presume if I just touch the fan and ground myself regularly I'll be ok? After leaving it unplugged for a few hours obviously

probably dodgey fan. iv opened up a hiper 580 before even made a thread about it with pictures too. do a quick search and you should be able to find it.may come in handy/

voltages can be very, very high. hence not recommended unless you know what your doing. Can you RMA it? doesnt it have like a 3 yr manf warrenty with it?

Yeah, I suppose I shouldn't really risk something like this without knowing entirely what I'm doing. Although I have seen numerous guides about replacing PSU fans - what's the deal with these then?

I rang up Hiper and I can get an RMA, but I'm not entirely sure I want one. From the reports on the forums and the thread cyber-mav referred to it seems like the new Hipers are far more unreliable than the older ones (which I have). Between the cost of shipping this one back from Ireland and waiting for postage and for Hiper to sort it out, I could have a Corsair HX520 in less time and not too much more money.

Ideally I'd like to crack it open try fix the fan as long as I could do it safely. Is there any proper way to do this or should I just forget about it completely?

*pops head out of bunker.

Bin it and get a new one, its going to go boom eventually, as you'll see if you do a Hiper TypeR 580w search on here. :p

if you do open your psu up, do take pics of it and share with us please. want to see how it is compared to the pics of the new one i posted.

I think I've settled on what I'll do. I'll RMA the Hiper and sell it when I get the new one, and order the Corsair HX as well. I presume Hiper will send me a brand new boxed one - has anyone had any experience of their RMA process? I've never returned anything to a manufacturer before, just OcUK.

I feel kind of bad selling a PSU with the potential to explode to some poor sap, but hey, Hiper have made a business out of it :D

I'm afraid I probably won't open it up now since it voids the warranty and I wouldn't be able to return it. From looking in through the fan though, it certainly looks like there's far more inside than the one in your thread. I can post pics from the outside if it would help?

why would anyone want to play around with fully charged up capacitors ? im not gonna be working inside a psu when its powered on, thats asking for trouble :)
