Hey guys looking for a bit of advice here on what would be a good move for me PSU wise. I have jsut had to return my Hiper Type R 580w under RMA after I started recieving power warnings under load and it will be replaced more than likely I assume. Decided to send it back before it would have failed or blew in which to protect my components. Now is this my chance to step away from Hiper or should I stick with the unit I get as a replacement? I have seen many people sell their replaced Hipers on here for around £45 so would it be wise to do that and get myself something else.

Just looking for some advice on the situation.

If you're the slightest bit dubious (and i would be, given the posts about them) you have to ask yourself is the cost of a new PSU worth the possible cost of a new system?

If it was a Type-M I would say keep it but the Modular Type-R do have a pretty bad reputation.

Sell it and get another.

i indeed had 3 of these psus blow on me, i purchased them around spring 2006, i do not belive they were all the same batch, as one was red and 2 black ones.

first one went bang - no components damaged.

second one - made a wierd wining sound, fans started to go crazy. No damaged components.

Third ond - same as first.

dispite the reliablity of these psus, hipers customer service was pretty good. They assured me my replacment would be fine. I re-used 2 of the replacments and sold the third, after 1 year the replacment is still running fine.

The issue only seems to occur with there R type modular ones. these were the 650 watt models.

Its upto you, its probably going to be more expensive in the long run if you sell the hiper. Id keep it, depends on the value and age of your hardware. Im overdue for a complete new system, on the other side of the coin none of the hipers Ive had have cuased any damage, I believe this was the same with other folk on the forums as well. So the way I look at it, even if this one does blow, its probably not gonna damage my system.

hope this helps.

Type-M Hiper PSU's are fine nowadays.

Haven't heard of a single failure yet on this forum.

Obivously some units fail but most don't, like anything else (Type M's, Enermax's, Corsairs, etc).

The Hiper Type R's were terrible, but the company seems to have sorted this out now.

Tbh, all the PSU's sold on OcUK are good quality. Be Quiet!, Thermaltake, Hiper, Corsair, Enermax, Seasonic, Coolermaster, PC Power & Cooling, etc. etc. all offer very good standard's from their products. The only way to buy a dodgy PSU now would be to get something horribly cheap (in relation to the 'stated' wattage) and for it to be some un-branded piece of rubbish.

Dunno, HardOCP gave the 480w type M a really bad review. Q-Tec bad...

Running a Type R 480w in this (my 'deputy') PC. Gets a heck of a lot warmer than my Corsair...

They gave a decent review to the CWT (same as TX Corsairs) built 880W Type M PSU.

However, the 480W you mentioned was Andyson built, so that explains the differences(?).
