A couple of weeks ago my Hiper 580 Type R died (quietly) so i returned it to Hiper and in the meantime i used a Enermax Noisetaker 485W which seems to work just fine.

This morning a brand new sealed Hiper Type R turned up. I'm also wondering if the new Hipers are ok now and have been corrected.

My dilemma is i can only keep one, which one would you guys keep the Enermax or the Hiper?

keep the erermax am currtly running 1 nice and stable ive heard lots of bad things about hyper. i know if my psu died id replace with an erermax supply

Sell both and use the money to buy a good PSU like a Corsair HX 520watt or 620Watt or keep the Enermax Noisetaker....

The hiper 580w PSU only has around a 360watts on the 12v rails..

There is a maximum output of 360W on the combined 12V rails, which is rather low for a "580W" power supply. Of the power supplies I've reviewed recently, an Ultra X2 550W has 408W on the combined 12V rails, an Antec True Power II 550W does 420W, the SevenTeam ST-500EAZ does 456W, a Corsair HX520W does 480W and a Silverstone Element 500W has 432W on the combined 12V rails. Proof positive that one shouldn't look at the total output rating of a power supply when trying to find one that puts out more power on the 12V rails.

I've never had a problem with Hiper power supplies in builds and we've had very few back at work compared to other high quality PSU's.

We've recently had orders for customer spec boxes using lots of kit including 8800GTX's in SLI.
We bought in some Enermax 1000W PSU's and I am not impressed at all.
The first one gave an audio warning a red LED on the back and did not power up - DOA.
The 2nd one powered up no audio warning or red LED but due to naff assembly, a component was catching the rear fan stopping it from turning so again another DOA.
The third one did worked but the customer brought the box back 2 weeks later because it was dead.
You guessed it, the PSU was dead.
By this point I had enough and advised my boss to send the remaining stock back to the distibutor.
We couldn't find anything else in stock at any distributors that were 1000W but one had stock of OCZ 850W PSU's.
I wasn't too keen due the fact that OCZ admitted there were problems with their DDR2 667 ram a while ago.
By now our customer was getting dissolusioned but we decided to give the OCZ'eds a go.
Touchwood, they've been fine so far.
I know Hiper are due to release a 1000W PSU so I have no problem with trying them.

I know it's swings and roundabouts and there are probably plenty of happy owners of Enermax 1000W PSU's.
For me and the company I work for, two dead and one with poor assembly is more than enough hassle than we can deal with especially when the PSU's retail for nigh on 200 quid.
We can't afford to waste time (as anyone who's ever built high spec PC's with lots of kit knows how long it takes to loom and tidy all the cables) with having to keep stripping out PSU's.

My boss trusts my judgement and it's not the first time we've blown out a manufacturer due to shoddy kit.

Just my tuppence worth.

if its a modular type R 580w then they do seem to have a lot of failures, if your dead set on getting a hiper then the newer 670w + ones are better options or the non modular ones.

Thanks for your input guys, I'm going to leave the Enermax in and keep the Hiper as backup. Was going to sell it but the way PSU's are these days it might pay me to keep it as a backup.

Forgot to mention the Enermax i'm using is a replacement for one that died last year. So it's even stevens as far as reliability goes for me.

And yes It's a Black Modular 580w Type R complete with tackle box lol!

You built rigs for customers with two 8800gtx cards (rated at about 180watt each) running in SLI off a PSU that is only rated to give a max power output of 360watts on the 12volt rails.

So the two 8800gtx cards can draw up to 360watts on there own,,,plus you have CPU,hardrive/s,DVD writers/roms/FANs,motherboard,memory etc power draw....

That's not what he was saying. He was saying that he has had orders for folk using SLI GTXs and as a result has had to use/order 1000W Enermaxs. It was an anecdote to demonstrate that even the Enermaxs aren't always that great either.

Any component that fails for no good reason doesn't get reinstalled in my rig. If my Hiper 580 fails then the replacement one will get sold and something different installed.
