ok - just bought one of these to replace a 1900xtx card, problem is that i didnt notice the 6 + 8 power supply needed, what psus are recommended for this graphics card, considering the corsair 620, however im not sure that has the power adapters i would need for the 2900pro card.
another limiting factor i have is that i have the original lian li 1000 case which limits me to a fairly small power supply.

my last option is to buy a molex to six pin adapter to put in my existing 420 watt psu but im not sure im pushing it a bit with this.
many thanks - gus

Whats your current equipment, and what model/brand is your 420 psu.

The corsair 620w will me more than enough and the 6 pin adaptors on the psu can be used just fine. You don't need the 8 pin (the 6 pin just goes in).

Matthew

Yeah you need a moderatly beefy PSU with at least a pair of 6-pin PCIe cables.

I think any of the Corsair PSUs would be fine (using my 2900XT with an HX620) right down to the VX450. They're probably the most efficient PSUs OcUK sell. :)

I'm running mine with a 430w Seasonic S12 and it's been fine so far. I was going to upgrade the PSU, but it's perfectly stable so I don't think I'll bother.

many thanks for your help. i reckon i will get the corsair just to be safe......dont want to destroy any of this stuff !

Also, if your worried it may not be capable to handle the gfx card. You can get a graphics card power supply from Thermal take for about £25, or one from FSP but more expensive and makes more noise.

EDIT: just to clarify> If your current PSU is fine, and don't want to spend a lot of money on a new PSU just because of a modern hi current draw card, then just spend a little cash on a GPU power supply for about third the cost.

i cant seem to find a gpu power supply  i have always wanted something like that

I fail to see how it's a waste of money. £25 for a gpu power unit when you've got a perfectly functioning (but maybe not powerful enough for the gfx card, or don't want it running too hot), and just need a top up.

i think thats a great idea matthew. going to see how i get on tonight, because as i say, even if i wanted to part with £100 for a new psu, i may not be able to as i have limited space in my lian li case and the gpu psu might just be the ticket. thanks for the idea!

ok - got the corsair 620. the case was starting to look an awful mess with all those different adapters in so ive drilled part of the lian li case out so that a larger supply will fit. cant wait to get the new psu later on today ! air flow should be better which should allow a little more headroom when o/c'ing....
many thanks for everybodys help. gus

The corsair should really help out with air flow as your only have to plug in the bits your need, meaning less nasty cables :) I think some of them are the flat style cables that allow you to run them underneath the motherboard if you wanted to.

The corsair are nice quiet units as well. If you get any problems with it, then then goto 'house of help' which is the corsair official forum. The guys on there are a bit slow in response, but really helpful and friendly :)
