What would be the best upgrade for the HIS 4870 1GB?

I have a crossfire motherboard. Would it be worth sticking with ATI graphics or getting crossfire straight away or just the most powerful single GPU?

Thanks.

I'm in the same boat, going to wait till dec for 6950/6970 & see what that brings

It's hard to resist the GTX470s at the price they are now though:D

Depends on your budget and any plans you may have to upgrade processor and/or motherboard. Also depends what size monitor you have and what resolutions you play games at.

What is the 6870 meant to replace?

Its mid range so it replaces the 5850, price is similar to what 5850's were too.

@ OP:

Both the 470 and 6870 are similar in performance so it depends on price difference. 6870 uses less power and would leave the crossfire route open at a later date so maybe that's the best choice in your situation

Thanks. When the higher spec ATI cards are released will the 6870 drop in price? Also how much performance gain should I see? I like to play Need for Speed series, Railworks 2, Half Life and Crysis.

I am also looking to get an external drive to backup my system. Would a 6850 be worth the upgrade so I could transfer some funds to the backup drive?

performance gain is massive.

i had crossfire 4870's and replaced it with a single 5870 which has blown then away.

the 6870 (5770 replacement) is on par with a 5870 so is a very good card

Should I look at a particular brand? Which one is the best value for money? Also, what could I sell my current graphics card for bearing in mind it's an OEM product so it doesn't have a box or any adapters/connectors?

In your position I'd be tempted to get another 4870 and crossfire it for a fairly cheap performance boost as they can be had for under £50 second hand.
