HIS 6970 question...

Hi Guys,

newbie here with a simple (I hope) question...

I am considering a CFX build using 2x 6970s on an Asus P8P67-Pro. I notice the slot spacing on the Pro is such that there would be a single slot gap between the two GPUs. My question is; is the CFX bridge that comes with the HIS cards long enough to allow for this? If not, where can I purchase a longer CFX bridge?

TIA.

Syphon!:D

I believe that bridge would be long enough, i mesured on my UD5 and compared with your mobo, was using CF bridge that comes with GPU.

Yes cfx bridge is with all cf cards. I would stay away from the 6970 aa i have huge problems with mine now. Save money by going for 6950s and flashing it. These cards run really hot

I think that is only a problem with your particular card mate.

Hrm...

Even with a slot-spacing between the two?

You should be ok but I would go for 6950 and unlock the shaders.

Mines currently idling at 32C, with max temps of 82C (36% auto fan speed.) after a couple of hours of BFBC2 this morning.

Clocks 940/1375.

Not exactly "huge problems" or "really hot" is it?

The XFire bridge that came with My HIS 6970 is 61mm from centre of plug to centre of plug. Looking at it im not 100% sure if it would stretch with a spare slot in the middle. I have no way to test for sure im afraid as i only have the one.

As for temps with a custom fan profile on MSI Afterburner my 6970 idles at around 38c and peaks at 81c during furmark. Gaming is around 70-76c.This is with my cards OC to 950 core 1450 mem. XFire will push those temps up especially on the top card but the extra airflow from a slot space between would help I imagine.

OT: Cleeecooo your card sounds knackered, RMA it like eveyone keeps suggesting instead of continually posting tales of woe and ignoring advice.

Thanks for that, how thick is a 6970? That should give some idea if it will reach.

For example:

If the 6970 is 30mm thick, with it being double wide that means a single slot spacing would be 15mm.

So the total thickness of the card+spacing would be 45mm. The next card's CFX connector is at the "top" so with another 15mm spare that should be plenty of length surely?

Or am I thinking about this all wrong? The lengths in my example above are just arbitary...with an actual mesaurement we should be able to work it out.

EDIT:

Another way to check would be to see how many PCI(e) slots the CFX bridge spans on the back of your case...If it spans from the top of one slot, across that slot and another two (with a little bit to spare) then it should be fine no?

You have a possible faulty card though, as mentioned in the separate thread you started. You are passing off your experience as if this is the same for all 6970's which clearly isn't the case.
I'm not saying you suggestion is incorrect but your reason is flawed.

The crossfire bridges that comes with the cards will be fine mate... Also if you don't like flashing your cards just get the 2 x 6970's, also the 6970's have other advantages like faster memory and a 8pin power connector on them which will help in a stable overclock if you decide to overclock them. The 6950's are great value if you like flashing cards and fiddling.. Also have you thought about 2 x gtx 570's ? they are great cards too.

Yeah, I've considered the Nvidia cards but I fancied giving the ATIs a go...the cost differential is negligable and the performance is pretty much the same. Also the 6970s seem to scale a little better than the 570s from what I have seen (probably due to the 2GB framebuffer).

I've bee out of the loop a while and this is my first build since my old Abit IC7-MAX3 gave up the ghost several years back...

Basically looking at the following:
  1. 2600k
  2. Asus P8P67 Pro
  3. HIS 6970 in CFX
  4. Asus Xonar DX 7.1
  5. 1TB disk
  6. Samsung BD-ROM/DVD-RW
  7. Corsair Vengence 8GB kit
  8. Corsair HX1000
  9. Corsair H70 (for some noise reduction)
  10. Corsair 600T
(at this point I'm thinking I should buy shares in Corsair )
  11. Roccat Kave 5.1 Headset

Any other tips/advice would be much appreciated.

The crossfire bridge that comes with a HIS 6970 would not reach between my cards which are placed one slot apart, I used the longer crossfire bridge that came with my motherboard.

As your motherboard might not have the same spacing as mine between PCI-e slots 1 and 3 you might get away with it but I would measure up to be sure. The bridges that come with the HIS span 6cm from the centre of each socket and therefore the centre of the GPU's PCB, which should align with PCI-e sockets on the motherboard.
