Thanks to the 9.2cm silent fan, massive amount of cool air is drawn from the central fan to cool down the GPU and graphics card directly. 4 heatpipes optimize cooling performance by removing heat from the core area, providing ultimate solution for professional gamers and HTCP users.

IceQ X is one of the quietest coolers. The card is below 28dB when watching movies, surfing Facebook, working. The card is quiet in 2D mode and remains quiet whether you are gaming, online socializing, entertaining or working.

The new architecture of the card gets more usable processing power for your money, enabling better frame rates in the latest games at high resolutions. In addition, with AMD PowerPlay™ & AMD PowerTune technologies, you can optimize the balance between performance and power consumption of your system by adjusting the engine clock during runtime of the card. The cooler is rather impressive on these, should definetely help further boost the crazy overclocks these cards are already achieving. :D :D :D

7850 beats 6970 when clocked and uses less power.
6970 is faster stock for stock though marginally, both great cards. :)

Is this a huge step up from a 6870?

Reason I'm asking is because I replaced my 4870 with a 6870, but its not the huge leap I was expecting.

I'm still barely maxing out my games for example.

Looking at the anandtech benchmarks its hard to judge, small increases in some games, large increases in others.

Do most people think of a custom cooler as a way to get more overclocking headroom?

Personally I think of it in terms of noise and nothing else.

Of course a 'custom' cooler should give you more overclocking headroom. It is what is there for. :)

Check the specs - Thanks to the 9.2cm silent fan, massive amount of cool air is drawn from the central fan to cool down the GPU and graphics card directly. 4 heatpipes optimize cooling performance by removing heat from the core area, providing ultimate solution for professional gamers and HTCP users.

That can only help!

Yeah of course it helps - but if you overclock it then the fans spin up and you lose the noise benefit. So you can EITHER overclock and benefit from cooling OR leave it and benefit from noise reduction.
