HIS 7950 IceQ Boost Edition voltage help

I am trying to undervolt my card for day-day usage / light to moderate gaming, as I run a CF setup I have more than enough power, heat and fan noise is what I am trying to control :)

I have noticed that even if I lower the core voltage (mV) in afterburner from the default 1.125 right down to .950 (and counting), both cards still work - great you would think, but there's a snag.

I keep seeing voltage spiking to 1.250 in AB when monitoring, I assume this is the "Boost" part of the BIOS kicking in and assuming a default vcore rate, irrespective of what I have set (can't think what else it could be), I have tried locking the voltage in afterburner, and lowering / raising the clock speed, but it ignores this.

Is there a way to override this as it's both unnecessary for me, and OTT in terms of voltage (I can hit 1350 on the core using 1.137 mV).

Does anyone have a none boost edition BIOS I could test out? Can't find one on techpowerup.

Thanks,
Chris.

I'm using a gigabyte 7970 bios on mine, works much better than the boost bios! With the added benefit of better fps at lower clocks.....

What clocks do you have at stock with gigabyte bios?
Is the OC better, did you have any problems with flashing 7970s bios to 7950?

Virus2k has been running his xfire 7950 HIS boost like it for some time. Quite a few others on the net have done it too, seems to be perfectly safe and stable.

I had no issues writing the bios to card one then card two.

Its a gigabyte bios and Stock clocks for it is 1000/1375. It gave an 8fps advantage in Heaven over the boost bios oc'd to 1020/1450.

I found the 7970 bios stays cooler in general idle, but also find the fan profile is a bit more aggressive so I tweaked it in Afterburner.

With the boost @ 1.25v I couldn't get clocks over 1050/1450 without stability issues in Heaven or forcing constant voltage.

With the 7970 I can run benches at 1175/1500 (1.17v), and haven't played more than this yet but I reckon I can get 1200 core or more and possibly some more out of the memory....

Awesome, will give this a try, is the BIOS on tech power up?

I assume if it goes wrong I can just switch to BIOS 2 and revert the settings as my understanding is both BIOS's are the same?

Drop me a message using trust and I'll send it to you....virus2k put it on a link but it no longer seems to work.

And yes, you can revert easily by flicking the switch to bios slot 2 :)

Gutted, tried the BIOS and it works perfectly, with the exception that I run 3 monitors for Eyefinity, the monitor connected via HDMI will not output, tried removing the drivers and re-installing but this made no difference.

Reverted back to the HIS BIOS and it's working fine again now.

I imagine it would work if I were to purchase another mini DP adaptor and connect it via DVI as the other monitor works fine like this, but this will set me back £20.

So back to my original request I guess, does anyone have a none boost BIOS for the HIS IceQ?

Bugger, that's a pain mate :( sorry it couldn't help. I run 2xDP and 1xDVI so I haven't tried the hdmi port, but its useful info to others, I'm sure there must be a non boost version banging around somewhere.

Thanks skyjawa

I tried to flash this bios onto my card but it will not even post. i used atiflash through dos with the following command atiflash.exe -f -p 0 gigabyte.bin.

Im not sure if they have stopped you doing this now as i got the card quite recently.
