HIS 7950, large FPS drop within a couple of days, what could I have done wrong?

Hi there, recently built my 1st gaming rig, and it is pretty awesome, or sort of was, so not currently that great with all the technical stuff.

I have a HIS reference 7950 which was awesome for gaming with and I could play BF3 on ultra, but now I have to play on medium for some reason as the FPS has dropped from 60FPS which is a very nice number to below 40. This has only happened within the last week or so. I found this out first as I tried to record a game on Cod: Waw where I could easily record at 60, but not any more. I tried out Bandicam and still get a similar FPS, only a bit more than usual.

Is my GFX getting 'faulty' or is there something I could have maybe done to make this happen? I recently downloaded MSI afterburner and increased the clock speeds a little with a but of an FPS boost and not much of a temp increase. I reset the speeds back to factory settings and it still gets low FPS which is very irritating.

What could I maybe do to solve the problem with FPS as I do have a decent system and would quite like to play some Cities XL 2012 which is on sale this weekend and record it. Would you recommend me asking for a new unit, (I purchased it from here)?

Thanks for your help!

My processor is an AMD FX-4100, I have heard that this could potentially bottleneck my GFX card.

is your cpu overclocked? what speeds your pc memory? overclocking the cpu would help more that overclocking the gpu

have you updated your graphics drivers recently? Maybe you could try uninstalling and re-installing them and see if that helps.

My CPU isn't overclocked as I still have the cooler that you get with the processor which isn't to great. My RAM is 8gb G-Skill Ripjawz with 1600Mhz clock speed.

Very, very nooby question here, I have never touched the GFX drivers so this may be the source of the problem. Where will I find them and how can I update/uninstall them?

I think that's your problem, add video recording and it will put even more load on the CPU.

Look here. http://abundantcores.blogspot.co.uk/p/a-cpu-can-bottleneck-and-gpu-in-gaming.html

Keep in mind that an FX-4100 is about 15% less powerful than a stock Phenom II x4.

The best thing you can do is overclock the bejeebers out of your CPU.
Or get a better one.

Try FRAPS, that's the best gaming video recorder there is.

Dxtory is the best :-) it offers much better features and is less performance hit.

The thing is, he was getting good fps until a few days ago so the bottleneck thing might not be the issue.

Btw, Afterburner's recording utility works perfectly for me when recording to the hdd @1080p/60fps and unlimited recording length doesn't need to be paid for :)
Maybe it wouldn't be so good with a less able cpu though...
Haven't tried any others apart from fraps.

I find MSI AB junk for recording, unacceptable quality and unacceptable FPS drops in BF3

If you are recording you may have found an issue with the harddrive you are recording the data to? Perhaps its on a slower sector or impeding a fail?

Boot and App's drive is a Samsung SSD, but for recording i have an external 320GB 7200RPM WD 3.5"

The workload on that drive is absolutely flat out with MSI AB recording, so you could be right.

I find the end result poor picture quality and a little jerky.

FRAPS is Cristal clear and smooth on that drive, with it it's also not working as hard.

Perhaps if i used an external SSD it might be much better, but that's a bit expensive.

any background programs or services running? this would slowdown gameplay

as for recording fraps works fine for me

if i were the op id buy a good quality aftermarket cooler and overclock the cpu a little, doest have to be extreme, are you pairing the gpu with the built in graphics? i think you can do that on amd too??

Unfortunately AMD's don't come with iGPU's, that is unless you have an APU.

This http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-035-CM&groupid=701&catid=2330&subcat=2341

should get him 4.4 to 4.6Ghz, i'm pretty certain it's the CPU that's the cause here. even with a Phenom II x4 @ 3.2Ghz i found it was bottle-necking my GPU at 1200 / 1500, which is the same performance as a 7950 @ 1000 / 1500, especially if i dropped it off ultra settings as you can see in my link.

effectively what your doing is moving the work from the GPU to the CPU

As he was getting good FPS in BF3 previously, adding a cooler to his CPU is not going to give him the fps back. I would go with Wazza on this and ask if the OP has recently installed any programs? Check and see what processes are running and if any of them are eating into the CPU. If need be, google every process to make sure you are virus free.

If all good there, run Memtest86+. It will take a while but is worth making sure your ram is good. Report back if these help/don't help and we can go a bit deeper :)
