HIS 7950 - System halting and restarting at < 70 degrees

Hello all.

So as title describes, my 7950 has become problematic over the last couple of weeks and before I just buy a 970 I thought i'd seek some advice.

I've taken the card out and cleaned what i can without disassembling, changed drivers back to pre-crimson as this only sorta came about after upgrading but the same thing occurs. As soon as I try to do anything taxing, the temp ramps up, the system halts and the card fans spin up to 100%. CPU temps and other temps are well within normal ranges, it's just the GPU.

What i don't understand is the maximum temp i've been able to log prior to halting is 68 degrees, i've had this card way above that, well, towards 80 before, so why now is it doing so?

Any information about things to try is more than welcome

Thanks!

Is it in a PCIe 3.0 slot? I've had this issue before on my old card.

Download GPU-Z and look at the bus interface. Run the test, if it only says PCIe 1.1 or 2.0, that'll be the problem.

Ensure it's in a PCIe 3.0 slot and that it's firmly in.

I would also recommend removing the cooler and replacing the paste as this can degrade over time I am assuming you are out of warranty on the card so nothing to worry about with removing the cooler.

Thanks for your replies.

BluesFanUK - I can confirm that the card is running at PCI 2.0 but is in a 3.0 slot. The motherboard (Asus Maximus V Gene) supports 3.0 in both slots, but, I wonder if the soundcard in the other slot is causing issues. But, this has been there for probably 6 months with no issues.

anthony - I had considered this, may try find some cheap compound at maplin to give it a go with as i left my decent stuff at home (200 miles away)

I have removed the cooler and replaced the paste today, temps have dropped by about 8 degrees on idle and it hasn't (touch wood) overheated to the point where the computer restarts.

sounds like an improvement ...... the other thing you could also do is look at the temps in your case if you can help get the heat out that will also have an impact.

You may already be doing this but its worth looking at if your not.
