Advance to the next generation of gaming with incredible performance, life-like graphics and support for the latest Microsoft® DirectX® 10.1. With 320 stream processors and PCI Express® 2.0 support, you're ready for the most demanding titles. And thanks to plug-and-play ATI CrossFireX™ upgradeability, it is easy to turbo-charge your 3D performance. ATI Radeon™ HD 3800 Series GPUs feature ATI Avivo™ HD technology with advanced audio, video processing, display and connectivity capabilities for high definition entertainment solutions. ATI Avivo™ HD technology includes fully integrated HD audio capabilities and supports playback of multi-channel (5.1) audio streams. When combined with the integrated HDCP copy protection, ATI Avivo HD enables a one-cable HDMI™ connectivity solution to high definition home theaters. Connect your PC to your home theater and start watching HD content from your computer using new ATI Radeon™ HD 3800 series graphics cards. The ATI Radeon™ HD 3800 Series is designed to decode and playback Blu-ray™ and HD DVD formats using dedicated hardware within the GPU. This technology, known as UVD or Unified Video Decoding, is part of ATI Avivo™ HD, the new collection of technologies that are designed to improve the visual and connectivity capabilities of ATI Radeon™ HD 3800 Series GPUs. UVD offloads the intensive process of HD video decoding and playback from the CPU while improving the visual quality. This means you can get smooth, high quality HD video playback from entry level PCs or free up the CPU for other tasks while you enjoy the movie. And with HDCP built into the GPU, the new cards easily enable playback of protected content. The ATI Radeon™ HD 3800 Series GPU further enhances the HD entertainment experience by making it easy to make the connection to a big- screen or home theater system. With built-in 5.1 surround audio (AC3) pass-through capabilities, the new GPUs and graphics cards support a single HDMI connection direct to a compatible TV or receiver. This single cable carries both the HD video and 5.1 surround audio for a clean, high definition connection. Some graphics cards will have an HDMI connector built in, while others will use a special ATI Radeon DVI-I to HDMI adapter. These options mean greater choice and flexibility for consumers when connecting to PC monitors or home theaters for maximum enjoyment of full HD 1080p content. ATI Radeon™ HD 3800 series GPUs offer full support for the new DirectX® 10 and DirectX 10.1 API (Application Program Interface) from Microsoft®; ready to meet the demanding needs of new, next generation games. DirectX® 10 is the first totally new DirectX® in the last 4 years and brings important graphics innovations that can be used by game developers for the next generation of games. DirectX® 10 introduces crisp, never-before-seen detail-rich images, visual effects and game dynamics capable of accurately simulating the real world. No matter which ATI Radeon™ HD 3800 Series GPU you choose, you can be assured that games will look as good as the developer intended! New ATI CrossFireX™ multi-GPU technology takes your gaming experience to the next level with more scalability, performance and compatibility. The technology combines the awe-inspiring capabilities of multiple ATI Radeon™ graphics cards and an ATI CrossFireX ready motherboard to meet the hard-core demands of your alternate reality. New ATI Radeon™ HD graphics cards are designed with an internal ATI CrossFireX™ Bridge Interconnect system to simplify installation. Experience stunning visual realism in today's demanding 3D games with uncompromising image quality, especially on HD displays. ATI CrossFireX: Multiply and Conquer! ATI Radeon™ HD 3800 series GPUs provide total support for the Microsoft® Windows Vista® operating system and improve the performance of the Windows Aero™ graphical interface. These represent superb value for money and a pair in Crossfire are extremely fast and believed to be as quick or quicker than a single 8800 GTX and even possibly the Ultra, especially when overclocked. :)

What are these like in comparison to the 512mb versions? i was going to buy the 512mb version to go with a 22" monitor, will the 256mb be enough? its nearly £30 more for the 512...

Thanks

HI there

The 512MB is quite a bit quicker out of the box, especially at higher resolutions above say 1600x1200 and 1920x1200.

However the 256MB for the resolutions your gonna use is not hugely slower and the cards are very overclockable which have help decrease the gap.

Think of it like this, a 3850 is nearly £50 cheaper, so once you have saved up another £50 you can add a second which will give far greater performance than a single HD 3870. :)

So just to clarify, the 512 3850 will not give much of a performance increase on 1680x1050 Resolution over the 256mb 3850?

I have never overclocked before, how easily can these be overclocked?

Thanks

are these cards a significant boost compared to a x1950xt 256 mb ram?

Im running at 1680 x 1050 and would like 4 x AA on cod4 on.
To give you an idea.

My old 1950 pro 3DMK06:5200 (overclocked)
My HD3850 3DMK06:10050 (overclocked)

Sell your 1950XT and put towards the 3850 and overclock it :)

GIBBO > When are the 3850 512Mb due? (preferably the 1800Mhz gddr3 versions)

Oxy> yes. performance should be increased by at least 1/3 + (33% +) over you 1950xt.

Id say it will do, games are starting to use more vram now, so a 256mb card is going to be memory limited, games are starting to use more already (like Crysis), and theres Dx10 which is bigger textures, thats gona eat vram, theres also AA/AF.
