Been having intermittent problems with my graphics card, after a period of time of playing games, sometime after an hour othertimes i can play for hours on end with no problems, it will suddenly start displaying artifacts on screen. Normally occurs after a save/load point. Doesnt seem to matter what game is played crisis, dawn of war 2, metro etc all on full settings

Ran Furmark 1.8.2 for half hour last night with the following set:
Benchmarking
Xtrene Burning Mode
Displacement mappping
post fx
full screen 1920x1080
MSAA - none (but is applied within CCC at 8x)

Card didnt exceed 73C and no artifacts last night - was playing for about 5 hours straight after doing this test

Currently no overclocks on my rig. specs below

HIS ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024MB running at 850/1200 fan set to 50% (these are default settings) using CCC v10.12
Intel Core i7 930 2.80GHz (Bloomfield) with Prolimatech Megahalems Rev B CPU Cooler and Sharkoon Silent Eagle 2000 120mm Fan
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Intel X58
Patriot Viper 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 12800C8 1600MHz
Corsair TX 750W PSU
Antec 902 case
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB
Windows 7 home 64bit

just wondering if its a fault with my card or if a few tweaks to some settings may fix it. I dont really want to have to under clock my card from its factory settings to be able to use it as it was intended.

let me know if you need any more spec's/screenshots

Furmark isn't going to stress your card properly due to the TDP throttling, so it's become rather difficult to diagnose faulty hardware.

I would guess that it's overheating given how crap the stock cooler on mine was (it just seemed to hold onto heat rather than dissipating it).

If you can get a few screenshots of the artifacts it might help.

heres some artifacts in furmark after it started playing up in metro yesterday, had to do some work as on call this weekend, when I came back all games were working fine so couldnt get any in game shots but will do when it next occurs

anybody got any idea's on this? should I RMA or try changing some settings, If its an overheating issue I could always move one of the front HDD bay fans to my side panel and see if it runs any cooler/more stable

It definitely looks faulty, those blocky patterns of artifacts are usually core related.

Unless your case is an absolute furnace and putting undue stress on the card I would RMA it.

cheers for your input guys, gonna test what temp inside of my case is but it doesnt seem to hot. been monitor temps last couple of days for both GPU and CPU and nothing unusual, at 100% load in games GPU sits around 67/68C and CPU hasnt gone above 50C

still not seen this occur since Sat morning and been using the PC most of the wkend and this evening since I got home
