HIS HD2900XT Fan Issue?

drunkenmaster said:
the early drivers have graduating fan increases in speed, the latest drivers have screwed fan settings and only have two fan speeds, slow and essentially silent or full whack. full whack should come on around 70c (amd gpu tool to check temp and overclock) and is loud, but not as bad as a 7800/x1900xtx on full whack. unfortunately there isn't(i don't think) any way to directly control the fan speed right now, but ati tool i believe is on the way to a beta version that works with the series of cards which might sort it out. older drivers you can use and the next set which should be 3-4 days away should have a fix for it also.

from watching temps i have silent fan up to 70C, then fan kicks in a couple seconds later, once it kicks in temps usually come back down to around 65-68c under load but the fan doesn't reduce speed under 70c till you drop out of 3d, even between 3dmark tests it slows down), it definately does not need the full fan speed to remain stable and easily some setting in between will be pretty damned quiet and also keep card plenty cool.

Thats the exact issue im getting, should I try the CD drivers?

Just to throw another one into the mix, my HIS card is the same except I also get frequent high speed spin-ups for around 10s in 2D as well. I've been recording temps on idle for about the last 9 hours and it has averaged 68 with min of 64 & max of 71. The highest stable gaming temps I've reached have been 77.5 Avg, 79.75 Max & 69.75 min, although most of the time I suffer crashes at those temps either due to something in the driver kicking in or just temperature related problems. I noticed at one point yesterday after playing for around 10mins it suddenly got very sluggish - came out of the game & found MOM.exe running at 100% CPU on both cores, rebooted & tried again and after around 10mins I noticed it getting a bit sluggish again followed by a blue screen.

I hope someone makes a cooler for my his card, cause mine gets loud as well:(
Both in 2d and gaming the fan randomly switches on for 15s full whack, then calms down, then does it again later :confused:
I can live with it but it is kinda annoying.

Just tried the cd drivers, the issue is still there, I have a feeling the issue didnt remain in any drivers before the cd drivers, so its a case of waiting for ATi to sort this one out.

To be honest if I were to purchase one of these cards, I'd rather have the fans just work at two speeds: 2d mode (low) and 3d mode (high) cos I ended up disliking my Shuttle system cos of the constantly changing pitch of the fan noise...

It was a bit like sharing my room with a ghost ;)

"wwoooooooOOOOOOOoooooooOOOOOOOOOOoooooh" :D

However one thing I noticed when fiddling around with the fan on my X800 is the enormous difference in how noisy I felt the fan was in going from 95% to 100%. It may just have been my ear being more sensitive to one pitch over the other, rather than a big difference in volume, but I'd be interested to hear if being able to set the fan to work at something less than 100% might make me consider the card a worthier alternative to the 8800...? I guess time (and a new release of AtiTool) will tell!

my sapphire card is quieter than the 1800XT it replaced, its idleing at 46-48 degrees which is some 8 degrees cooler as well.

That said i cant do any temps testing as i have put the 1800XT back in for the time being.

in general ati and nvidia fan speeds have almost always had well, what you'd say were non optimised settings, they all use ranges of temps to sort out fan speed but they all tend to use quite big jumps in fan speed and obviously exactly what speeds you need at what temps are going to be down to your room, location, case, case cooling and so on.

for instance i've never had a ati/nvidia card that i need to have the fan at more than maybe 60-65% to get within a 2-3c load temp of what you get at maximum so i just use ati tool and change all the ranges to suit me, idle i have it quieter than default. some people idle will be quite high temp due to being in a smaller less ventilated case, for me idle temps are fine so i whack fan speed down on all cards. i also change the ranges so theres only 2 or 3 fan speed steps and then a max fan speed at some temp i've never reached under normal conditions just in case.

the main problem with often changing fan pitch is if those ranges are set so you're getting a say 10% fan speed increase at 50c, and another change say at 70c, and your idle temps go up and down from 48-51, load goes up and down from 68-72c, just whack in a new value that was an inbetween fan speed and works from 45-55 and 65-75 for the 2nd range and you'd fix it. only reason i use ati tool really for complete control of fans.

i'm also taking the card apart, maybe tomorrow, sometime soon probably though, and see if i can't get a MCW60 swiftech waterblock to fit, i think the slightly raised centre of the block will just fit inside the shim for the card.
