Hi first post so here it goes.

I have been reading posts on here for about 6 months but only just registered as i only had

a hotmail account.

My Spec:
AM2 4200 at stock
2GB OCZ Daul Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series
abit K9N SLI motherboard
HIS HD3850 512mb 780/1000
Westen Digital 320GB SATA
Creative audigy Platinum (soon to be changed to an xfi xtreme audio pcie)
Hiper Type-R 580W

On to my question... I have a HIS HD3850 512mb and i have it clocked at 780/1000 using

stock volts and stock cooling using overdrive( i know its rubbish but I was just seeing

what i can get roughly before buying an accelero s1.)

I havent even pushed this card yet so i'm pretty pleased with it.

My questions are:

1. even with this overclock i only get 8041 while i get 7970 at stock, why am i only

getting a tiny boost?
2. i cant seem to even get my cpu to boot up at 2300mhz but could this be a bottleneck?
3. could my motherboard be a problem since its an SLI board?

I think thats all for now.

All help is very appreciated :)

CPU is a massive bottleneck at that speed, its well holding you back, upgrade asap.;)

He is right about it being a bottleneck but to upgrade right away is absolutely terrible advice and should be disregarded immediately.

If your resolution is 1440x900 or above then the GPU will take control more and more as you up the resolution from this point. Well it's really from 1280x1024 and above that will see less and less load on the CPU. But I think it only starts to improve at 1440x900. It might even be 1680x1050 but at least you know it doesn't matter about CPU speed as much any longer. However you should overclock that CPU to about 2.6Ghz and above to release the true potential of the card.

If you just use that resolution for 3Dmark then don't worry about it. With a GTX and my X2 3800+ @ 2.8Ghz it was still bottlenecking the card by a fair bit. I play high resolutions when I game so my CPU was absolutely fine for anything I played. I only upgraded recently so I could give my mum my old parts (not gfx card though).

FFS, get a clue, not all games are GPU dependent at high rez and i wouldn't call 1680x1050 a big resolution, he wonders why his 06 score is crap, reason, his 2.2 Ghz CPU, which he cant clock because either it or his mobo sucks, best suggestion, upgrade. Oh yeah, it maybe to expensive to upgrade this day and age, not.

Lol - angry much?, oh and it's you that needs a clue as you don't seem to know what you're talking about. Your advice was terrible and you should check it in future or ask your purple shirt m8, he might be able to keep you up to date. An overclocked X2 CPU at 2.6Ghz and above is plenty for resolutions @ 1680x1050 and above. I know it's not a massive resolution but if you can remember the monitor survey that someone done on this forum not that lot ago then you'd realise the average screen for OCUK members is, wait for .......................... 1680x1050 (quiet please crowd) :p. If you look at my sig then you'd see the P225 which runs at 2048x1536 so I know about CPU and GPU dependencies. From what I can remember I think CoD2 online and FEAR online as well as erm CoD1 and Supreme Commander are CPU dependant. In fact Rockstar_Wild I think you should go and buy a new CPU today!!!!!!! :p (joke).

What resolution do you game at Rockstar_Wild?. Also what is holding back your overclock?. If you game at a higher res then even at 2.3Ghz it should run titles quite well but you'd do best at about 2.5-2.6Ghz and higher. If it's the CPU then you could pick one up second hand for cheap as chips.

From what I've read, the board can overclock. Below is a review of your motherboard and it doesn't seem to be that bad.

I game at 1024x768 as my only monitor is a 32" LCD TV, but it's soon being replaced with a 24" LCD monitor. Im not sure which yet.

I dont know why i cant overclock. As soon as i push the fsb up to 210 or above it wont even boot to the bios. it isnt overheating as it runs at 40C idle and about 55C load.

I bought the motherboard as like you said it overclocks quite well but i cant figure out why it wont.

Which is why its making me decide whether to change the motherboard to an Gigabyte GA-MA770-DS3 or to upgrade to a AM2 6000 or sell the board and CPU and go the Intel way.

I cant find a review of the board but soon im going to have a pcie sound card and a pcie tv card so thats the reason for that choice with the possibility of more pcie cards in the future. Plus im only going to be using single card for a long time.

Ahh that will be heavily CPU dependant at that resolution. The 24" however would help you a lot in that situation. The new 24" Hyundai screens look pretty decent on here but I don't know a lot about the newer LCD screens.

Have you loosened up your RAM timings when trying to push the FSB up as on the the odd occasion you will get RAM that is just difficult to do anything with. Also have you tried a different BIOS version?.

I can't see you not getting any performance out of your current CPU so I don't think that a new system is needed. I've seen the Asrock boards overclock a LOT further than that and these boards have limited Overclocking options compared to your board. Something will give. Post about your problem in the overclocking section and try to make it detailed as much as possible for myself or any others to get you started. With your CPU at 2.5Ghz and upwards then your experience will start to improve. At 2.5Ghz on your 24" screen then you will be laughing as the GPU will take control :).
