HIS IceQ Boost - Strange Noise

Hi guys,

I just fired up my new HIS IceQ Boost gfx card and noticed a very strange noise - the best description I can give is it sounds like an old hard drive loading. Like a ticking/clicking noise. Its very audible when on the desktop but sometimes goes away when I'm running a game. I'm not sure I can live with it so may RMA but just wondering if anyone else had this problem or knew of a way to fix it?

I didn't notice it before I installed the ATI drivers and its definitely coming from the gfx card. Could be fan related but changing the fan speed doesn't seem to have much of an effect.

Thanks in advance :)

Motherboard is ASRock Z77E - tried turning off c1e but doesn't make a difference. I think its a problem with the fan, and I will probably RMA as its quite distracting. Then weird thing is it gets worse on the desktop when I move the mouse or load anything. I really don't know whats causing it.

How well does it overclock? Its its a good clocker id keep it. Does sound like coil whine though. It can get better over time. You can RMA for it though if you want.

coil whine if it's doing that

what make/model psu? can be either the mb/gpu/psu that causes it its hard to pinpoint

Had a little go this morning and it hit 1200/1400 on stock voltage (1.25v) - temps around 58-60 and no artifacts in Unigine Valley. Artifacts at 1225 core but the mem might go higher. Think its worth hanging on to?

Test games at 1200/1500. It if passes a few hours of gaming solid id keep it. Changes are the coil whine will decrease over time. 1.25v stock voltage is very high for these cards. Often you can run them at a lower voltage to keep temps down which normally stops artifacts appearing so quickly. Trial and error. Max i can get on mine are 1125 on the core so i have some rather poor clockers. Still 200mhz over stock though.

PSU is a Corsair HX620. It doesn't sound so much like a whining as a very fast ticking noise, like a HDD loading. Is this what coil whine sounds like? Never experienced it before.

Its not quite as bad as it was - seems to have settled down a bit. Definitely gets worse when there is heavy hdd activity, like when windows boots up. Anything I can do about it? Does it tend to sort itself out?

It's definitely hard drive noise then and completely unrelated to the graphic card.

I think you might be hearing 2 noises and thinking their both coming from the graphics card.

The noise from mouse movement, did you happen to have any games open in the background? I noticed that before, if I minimize a game then move my mouse on desktop there's a squealing noise.

There's no way hdd activity could have an affect on the graphics card. All ssd's actually make a light buzzing noise when working but I doubt this is what you're hearing.

I'd say its either coil whine coming from the psu or idle coil whine from the graphics card. I've seen this on a 7950 boost I used before (but it wasn't affected by hdd usage or mouse movement) Either that or the psu, some do make ticking noises when under really low loads.

Also might be coil whine on the motherboard caused by hdd activity. I notice this on my current motherboard but its very quiet.

Stick your head in the case to try to locate it.
