HIS X1950 Pro - Misbehaving

Hi There...

I've just bought one of the following;

HIS ATI Radeon X1950 Pro ICEQ3 Turbo 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (AGP) - Retail

And it's connected up to the following;

Tagan TG480-U01 480W PSU
Asus A8V Deluxe mobo
Athlon 3500+
2 HDs, 1 DVD drive.

The PC is a few years old now, and was previously running an nVidia AGP card.

I've uninstalled the nVidia drivers, then swapped out the cards. Grabbed myself an adaptor to provide power to the ATI card, and then switched on.

The PC boots into Windows XP just fine, but the problems began when I installed the latest ATI drivers. I'd installed them, began to run a 3D Mark benchmark, and within a few seconds the screen went completely green, and I couldn't do a thing. Upon rebooting, I could see the POST information, but the machine would hang before it reached desktop.

I booted into safe mode and rolled back to a restore point prior to installing the drivers, which lets me back into Windows XP. I've since tried installing them again, but now the screen goes blank during installation of the drivers.

Not sure what to try next - any suggestions?

Hmm, people usually have problems with the white plug because it's a tight fit (ohh er).

But as yours wasn't, we'll move on.

When you removed the Nvidia drivers, did you use Driver Cleaner 3.0?

Considering you only have problems when you try and install the ATI drivers, it's most probably a software problem. Download DC3 run it, then install the drivers again.

Hi There...

I didn't use Driver Cleaner 3 originally, but I have done since your posting.

Still having problems though - I install the driver, try to change some settings, and then the screen freezes, system reboots. Any attempt to get back into the OS is unsuccessful, unless I go into safe mode and uninstall the drivers.

Tried with Omega Drivers too, but same problem.

I keep booting to a nice pale blue screen, where it stays.

I have same card tho its the 512mb version, mb, cpu as you and it was working for a time with 6.12 offcial drivers from ati/amd site. Wasnt working well later in the day and the next day so i removed the card as i think its a psu issue for me and the cheapo 4pin to 6pin adaptor didnt fit properly even when i sawn off the ends so metal is at the end tips.

Make sure you have .net framework installed before you install drivers/ccc.

Hi There...

Yeah, I've got .net installed.

Still no joy getting it to boot into XP when drivers are installed.

I had this happen when one of my old cards died. With no drivers installed I got a screen, as soon as I installed the drivers I got the black screen of death. :(

Seems to be fair few problem threads regarding this card, if you get one that works then well its an awsome card. :)

Hi There...

Just swapped PSUs with my main PC to see if it was a power issue, as it's a 600W Tagan, and has the proper PCI-e connector.

Still the same situation, so at least I know it's not a power issue.

Do you guys think it's RMA time then?

Try a complete reinstall of windows?

Have you gone from Nvidia to ATi, or was your old card ATi? The change over from one to the other has been known to produce problems only fixed via clean windows install or drive clean up if you know what your doing.

If all else fails, I'm up for a reinstall I suppose. Prefer not to, though!

nVidia to ATI.

Can you test it in another machine.
Unfortunately not. PCI-express on my other PC.

That kinda narrows it down a bit, suggest re-instal (fresh windows install is never a bad thing if its getting old ;) ) failing that then RMA card as there's been a couple of these with duff memory iirc.

Hello, this is my first post here.

Im having the same problem with this card, Ive put it down to it over heating.

With the side panel on, the card it hits 42 when doing nothing,
when i run 3d mark it was in the 50's then crashed (Black screen
or screen had diamond shapes all over it then black screened).
The card does not last long, a couple of minutes at most when trying to
run a game or test any 3dmarks.

i used ccc, I had it open and dragged it down to one side of the
screens so you could see the temps in between tests in 3dmark05/06,
3dmark03 is a bit quick.

When the side is off the machine it sits at around 34/35 and hits mid 40's
in the tests. I managed to run all the 3d mark programs on it and then
play DOD:s for several hours.

I dont seem to have that much heat blowing out the back of the card,
i can hardly feel anything, the fan is spinning and its very quiet. Does
the fan speed up on other user that dont have this problem? is there a
lot of heat blowing out?

I also bought the Corsair PSU. so i do not believe it is a power issue in
this case.

Not for me! I've tried all of my attempts both with the case sealed and with the side panel off, and get identical results every time.

Try this.

1.Remove drivers
2.Boot to safe mode
3.Use DCPro to remove ati and nvidia drivers (options)
4.restart
5.When at windows cancel any attempt to install window drivers for the card.
6.Install 6.12 drivers or if you want try latest 7 series drivers.
7.Reboot

Or

Steps 1-3 then ignore 4 and 5 and continue to 6-7.

Also try using the 6.12 from here

As with turbo editions i aint sure but they might need specific drivers from HIS. I will explain why as i saw this on the HIS site.

Q18. Why can't we use the driver under the section "Built by ATI" on ATI's web site for our ATI products?
A. On ATI's website, there are two sets of drivers, namely, "Built by ATI" and "Powered by ATI". The former are solely for cards built by ATI herself while the later are for other manufacturers. These two sets of drivers may detect different sub vendor and sub system ID that are manufacturer dependent. ATI has designed the drivers and BIOS as such. Hence, our card can only used the drivers in the "Powered by ATI" Section. ATI Cards by other manufacturers will have the same situation.

This is the process I've been following, no joy so far. I've tried installing the latest ATI and Omega drivers, but I see the same results every time. It's as if the card doesn't like changing resolution once the drivers are installed.

I'll try the drivers from the HIS site tomorrow - this thing has eaten up enough of my weekend already!

Thanks for the advice guys - I'll let you know how it goes with the 6.12 drivers from HIS.
