Well... I stated in a post that my card may be suspect with a couple of lockups, but its been pretty solid since.

Loaded up ATI Tray Tools - not for overclocking, but for monitoring temps, and discovered that at idle the card was at around 50 deg C, but under load it rockets above 70 deg C. Now, from everything Ive read, Im lead to believe these temps are way above normal - and I have pretty good cooling in my case.

Anyways - I decided to manually adjust the fan speed and noticed that in the fan speed control table, some of the settings (which I didnt adjust) were way to conservative. Only really set to ramp up when above 75 degs... is that the default for the card? I decided to set the speed manually at about 80% and the temps are much lower - at load at around 65 degs.

Is it possible that fan speeds are not set quick enough out of the factory, or is it OK for the card to run at 70 deg + temps?

70+ is perfectly fine, my x1800 XT idles at around 55, and underload hits about 71-72, possibly a tad higher, depends on how demanding the game im playing is, but a HIS should probably be a bit cooler, either way the 70's are fine as said regardless, so i wouldn't worry about it. :)

Well I've just sold my Sapphire because it was 70C+ sometimes, All I've read about the HIS is how cool it runs (50C load) So I hope this is not the case

Had to return my card, as it locked up under load. This wasn't to do with the core temperature, though, which idled at under 40 degrees, and at load increased to around 60 degrees.
