Underboss
Hope it is ok to post this, as I am feeling quite sick after hearing about this hit and run on Sunday
here's the details :
Thought I'd post this, just in case...
Hit and run at the St George's Southern Sportive 26 April, any more witnesses?
A few of us witnessed a shocking hit and run on the Chinnor Hill descent at the beginning of the ride, when a car (we think a dark grey Honda Civic) deliberately knocked one of the riders of his bike and sped off. He suffered broken ribs and a broken scapula as a result.
The ambulance and police arrived very quickly and were great, but we doubt they have enough information to track the car down, so if any of the other riders witnessed what happened or maybe heard what was going on behind them at about 9.10 and may have seen the car go past then please do contact Martin the event organiser on [email protected]
If you live in the area and notice a newish dark coloured Honda Civic car with damage to the passenger side (they lost part of the plastic trim) it may well be worth getting in touch with the police too.
------------
If you saw anything or have any information that might help to track down this driver, please contact us and we can put you in touch with the local police handling the investigation. Particularly, if you have any video recording of your ride, and think you might have been in that area at around that time, please check in case you might have caught that vehicle on camera either before or after the incident. Even if you can't help personally, if you have the time to share the witness post from our Facebook page (facebook.com/southernsportive), maybe someone who sees it might know something. Any driver who would willingly endanger a cyclist in this way deserves to be caught.
We'd like to add our best wishes to the rider involved for a full and fast recovery. We were pleased to hear from him later in the day yesterday and learn that (as far as can be expected in the circumstances) he is OK. We'd also like to thank all the riders who sacrificed their own ride to stop and help at the scene. As ever, in the rare circumstances when things go bad, the camaraderie amongst riders impresses us.
Finally, we want to point out that, in over 20 years of running cycle events, accidents are actually pretty rare, and malicious incidents like this almost unheard of. In fact, this is the first incident of this sort that we can remember happening on one of our events. So keep riding, keep safe and share the roads; in our experience (whatever the papers may say) most people on the roads are just normal, decent folk who want to go about their journey without hurting anyone.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
