Back in '89 a hitch from Newcastle down to the West Country took me across the A69 onto the M6
where I ended up stranded at Charnock Richard services.
Without a penny to my name, I remember drooling as I eyed up the bain maries brimming with mean looking lamb shanks.
I love a lamb shank I do...
I was tired, cold, wet and hungry when my white knight eventually arrived on the scene in a red Honda Aerodeck
"Where are you going?",
"Somerset" -
"Your lucky day! I'm going all the way to Taunton"
"Get in and make yourself comfortable" - (They were Recaro seats!)
"Like the heating on?" (I was frozen)
"Like a sip of my coke?" (Cheers, I was parched)
"Fag?" - (I was gasping)
"Tell you what, make it a spliff instead. Here's the deal, You roll, I drive!"
"Music?" - (getting embarrassing now)
"Phil Collins ok?" - (not half!)
...and for the next 200 miles we listened to the complete Collins catalogue back to back in chronological order
even pulling over at Gordano services and wating for 15 minutes so we could listen to side 2 of "...But Seriously" before we went our separate ways.
You don't see hitchhikers anymore do you? I can't help thinking the younger generation is missing out.
Did any of you used to hitch back in the day?
