Is there any massive differences I should be aware of? Hive website just seems to say that the main differences are less controls on the thermostat itself - which is fine by me. Now that the Nest is out of the argument, our gasman is recommending the Hive, but not the mini for some reason?

Having heard that Hive doesn't support OpenTherm I'd be tempted to go Tado (coming from someone with 500 odd quid invested in Hive).

I understand the boiler we're getting doesn't easily support OpenTherm. It's a Worcester Bosch Greenstar compact, needs some sort of adapter thingy to work (and not well). I also looked into OpenTherm briefly and it seemed like it can cause a lot of issues, and doesn't particularly save a huge amount of energy etc. I dunno. I just spoke to a colleague of mine with Tado and he really likes it but he's also spent a small fortune on smart TRVs. I actually think the thermostat looks butt ugly!

Yeah if you aren't bothered by OpenTherm then Hive is perfect. I don't know any difference between mini or regular, but I also can't comment when I've ever used the stat as it's all on your phone.
