Hi,
I've been into my computing for nearly 10 years now and only with the arrival of graduation from university and the arrival of a well paid job can I finally pursue this interest (that is when my cave diving hobby isn't sucking the funds up!)
My current (ancient) build is : -
Asus P5B Motherboard;
Intel Core2Duo E6750 2.66 Ghz;
Akasa X7 cooler;
8Gb of Patriot RAM DDR2;
3 Samsung 500GB HDD's
nVidia 9800GT
BFG PhysX card;
I'm trying to get underway for a new build but I've got a question reower. I've been on a few websites to generate quotes for power and they keep varying dramatically.
I've currently got an Atrix 580W PSU and its powerig that lot, plus a few things like wireless cards, TV cards, 2 DVD-RW's and untold LED fans when I've had quotes that I'll need 680W! (Thats what the coolermaster quoter gave!) Now given that my rig is about 4 years old I don't think that my PSU is going to be able to meet that requirement!! What are your thoughts on my power needs?
I'm contemplating getting a 1kW PSU for my new rig which is going in an Antec Darkforce case. This new case is going to be my chassis for my slowly progressing new rig. This will also give me lots of headroom (reower) for getting into overclocking and water cooling (re:space).
I'm currently eyeing up an XFX 790i Ultra SLI mobo. Why? Well firstly its LGA775 so I can stick in my C2D for now. Then I'm going to replace the C2D with a top spec quad core (then put the C2D back in the old case and use the old rig as a media pc/server). Quad Core should do me for a while I reckon.
I'm then in a position to get another 9800GT to make SLI with. Eventually I'd like to put a third one in (I like to do video processing and 3D image/video processing). Also sticking a third one in isn't too financially bad when I can get them for 80 £ a pop even if the benefit decays exponentially. Whereas getting a GTX480 is a £500 hole...... an SLI GTX480 is a £1k black hole and tri-SLI GTX480 is just daft
The other benefit of the the 790i is that it takes DDR3 which means when I take the next step of going onto the i-series processors it makes the wallet burning less vigorous . As it's just a processor and mobo to buy.
I think doing this way means I get a good steady improvement for my cashflow (which is more longterm than short - I just can't do a 2k expense).
So thats me introduced. Be nice I'm noobish
Ciao for now
