So - finally joined overclockers - been here many times before, but now I've only just signed up.

I'm in the market for bits to build my new self built machine.
There's a first time for everything right?
So - try and not to be to annoyed when you see me posting about all kinds of stuff that I should really already know...

Gutted that I need to make 1000 posts before I can access the members classifieds though - that will take a bit of doing - but hopefully I'll get there sometime soon. I guess it keeps out the riff raff right?

Anyway - I'm going to be building a budget machine - with hopefully, not budget performance. I want to acquire 2nd hand quality components to keep the price down, and the machine will mainly be a DAW (ie Digital Audio Workstation) and, if I can select components correctly, I'm planning on maybe making it a Hackintosh as well!

Ambitious for a first time builder!

Well - I've taken machines apart before, and done a few minor things, so I guess it can't be that difficult, but we'll see.

What I don't know though is, how important seemingly innocuous things might be on a hackintosh build - but I guess that's maybe not for this particular forum. Things like PSU - do some PSU work better in a hackintosh than others?

Does only particular types of ram run with particular motherboards, and so on?

God knows - I've a lot to learn...

I can def see the point in the 1000 post thing - it makes a lot of sense - BUT - it knackers me from a potentially really good source of good value components. I am of course keeping an eye on things on Gumtree and eBay - but the more places for bits, the better.

Am I right in saying that it also comes with a 1000 day caveat as well?
I could have sworn I saw that in the rules as well.

Now THAT is a killer if true...

Ah - so - I've managed to get my machine built - at least to some extent.
The bargain basement 4770k machine is at least functional, and apart from a heart stopping moment when all power went (ie a loose-ish power cable to motherboard), it's all gone very well.

My issue though at the moment is memory.
I have mentioned this in the memory area of the board, but so far ZERO replies, and there's been a shedload of views.

Just wondering if this are gets more traffic, and thus might get a response more quickly in here.

So - I bought some HYNIX 8GB 2RX4 PC3-10600R memory modules for cheap.

I had read somewhere that any 240 pin DDR3 should work in my motherboard (which is a Gigabyte Z87X-OC), and as it was so cheap, I opted to buy the ram - I took a punt.

But it didn't work.

The question is, did it not work, because inherently it's not meant to work?
OR, are these modules just faulty?

I've no idea, and no idea how to check.
I've got a 4gb stick in the machine just now and it runs fine on this.
I've also got 8gb still in the pack of Team Group 2400mhz Xtreem Frost, which I'm really tempted to fit.
Again though I'm not sure if this SHOULD work or not, (though I think it def should).

So can anyone tell me if both of these modules will work, or at least should work?

I'm unsure about cracking open the Team Group stuff, because I think I might need to get 16gb fitted (the machine is meant to be a DAW, and running lots of audio samples tends to use a lot of ram) - and it doesn't fit due to the massive heatspreaders, and the fact I'm using a Noctua DH14 cooler. I've even been thinking about removing the heatspreaders from these Team Group modules.

So I'm in a quandary...

I think I got to the bottom of my ram problem.

Registered vs Unregistered.

My Hynix sticks are REGISTERED, and thus I'm fairly sure aren't compatible with my motherboard.

I'll just need to see now if I can punt these sticks on ebay or something.

A cheap lesson learned I guess...
