HL on an ipod nano

heh kool i see u can get doom on it but doom just uses .wad files, so if u change it for halflife .wads u can play it too. Duke nukem is possible as well i imagine as it can be done on the psp :)

That's technically not Half-Life, but some kind of modded version of Doom, hence the Doom-style HUD and flat character textures. Still pretty cool though, but I imagine it's a complete pain to control.

Has someone actually recreated the whole of HL1 in that engine as well? That's damn impressive if they have.

it's a remade half life level running on the ipod doom1/2 engine...... i think?

I thought it looked like Doom. I guessed it just looked that poor because of the low-res but it being the Doom engine makes more sense. After all the Doom engine in open source where as I'm pretty sure the half life engine isn't (ok so it's based on the quake engine which is open-source but it's still pretty different).

Whats stopping it being a load of pics, and then being cycled through?

Absolutely nothing. And if you are that convinced it's fake, fair enough, I'm not the one to convince you otherwise.

Given however that Doom has long been ported to various iPod versions, and that there is a version for the Nano, is it not within the realms of possibility that the video is in fact iDoom running a modified WAD file that makes it look like Half-Life?

Its possible, but that is a map from the original half life, with the textures and models from halflife. I wouldn't have thought that the doom engine, let alone a nano would be able to support that level of T&L.

TBH, I would need to see it first hand to believe it.

Shame there aren't enough buttons. Forward, backward, left, right and enter (shoot)

True. Whats the point when you can barely play the game! Now Quake converted on to Pocket PC was all nice and playable with the stylus and all :)

I don't see why you're sceptical if you agree that Doom is possible on a Nano.

For all intents and purposes, that game in the video is actually Doom, and not Half-Life at all. Somebody has basically taken the code and files for iDoom, replaced the Doom textures with low-res Half-Life versions, replaced the character "models" (2d sprites in Doom) with ones based on the Half-Life models, and created a map for Doom that has the layout of a Half-Life map. Thus, it looks like Half-Life, but really isn't.

After the HUD, the NPC models are probably the biggest clue. They're clearly 2d sprites as opposed to the 3d models in Half-Life, as you can tell by the way they scale when moved towards, and turn when you move round them.

It's like putting a Ferrarri chassis on a Morris Minor, say. For all intents and purposes it might look like a Ferrari, but that doesn't mean it actually is one, or that it'll drive like one were you to try it. :)

The models that you saw were all 2D sprites. I didn't see anything that the Doom engine couldn't have displayed with ease.

But you are entitled to your opinion :).
