Greetings
Decided to play through HL2 in advance of getting the Orange Box (yes i've had HL2 since release and never finished, spot the slacker)
Sadly my plans are being interrupted by an annoying semi random crash on loading screens (usually when changing levels)
It doesn't happen at every load screen but its insanely common.
Usually when it happens the game just completely locks up and i'm unable to alt-tab, ctrl-alt-del or anything, only the mouse cursor is still functional but it takes a reset to fix.
Sometimes the game will drop to desktop with all sorts of random errors like unable to lock vertex buffers and such (can attempt to get screenshots of the errors if needed)
I've been all over the support section on the steam forum and tried all of the suggestions to no avail
At the suggestion of the steam site i done a memory test with memtest86 and the Windows Memory Diagnostic from Microsoft.
Memtest86 runs for about 10sec then flops over claiming a pile of errors while the Microsoft version finds no errors. Checked with my Dad's computer and on it (which has completely different hardware) and memtest86 gave the exact same error screen so i'm inclined to discount it's results.
Computer has no other issues and nothing else ever crashes (except when i get naughty with alt tabbing out of WoW and bsod the graphics driver).
Systems Specs just in case:
Athlon64 3000
1Gb DDR400
GF 8500 GT 512Mb
Nforce4 Chipset (using onboard audio and LAN)
Any suggestions would be welcome
p.s. If this would be better suited in one of the hardware forums feel free to move it
