HL2 EP1 Crashes on "Loading"

I've got an issue with EP1 crashing at every "Loading" point when playing through the game.

It was fine a couple of months ago when I started it, but I've come back to it again before I start EP2 and it's crashing each time I progress.

Anyone know anything that causes this?

mine did this on one level in particular. i fixed it by turning all the graphics to minumum, then turning them back up after it had finished the load.

Whereabouts was it that you had the problem?

just loading the area where you have to shuttle the citizens from Barney to the train station.
