HL2 episode 1 - Crashing

i had the odd crash with HL2, but HL2ep1 is unplayable at the mo, my pc is getting on a bit but meets the spec, it seems to lock up and the crash to desktop.

my system is

SN41G2 shuttle (win xp)
AMD 2500 (unlocked)
GT6600 (latest drivers)
1 gig of ram

anyone come across this?

just checked the cpu after the last crash and temp is 63 degs
