HL2 Episode One Crashing! Arrrgh!

I recently bought the HL2 Collectors Edition on Steam. I've played the full game without issue, but Episode One keeps randomly throwing me back to the desktop and it's very frustrating.

My PC is an HPxw8400 Workstation which has Windows XP SP3 installed. I have the latest Nvidia drivers for the Quadro FX560.

Help!

My game wouldn't even start until I added the -32bit command.

Hmm, is it at a specific point?

I had a wierd bug where if I looked at a certain NPC in one of the later levels it would ctd with a random memory error.

No, no specific point. I play for a while and it boots me, reload and it may be more or less time than the first instance before it boots me again.

It seems OK if I reduce the screen resolution, but then I am not running at the native resolution (1680x1050) and it looks crap
