hl2.exe has stopped working - Steam problem

Hi

Installed steam, bought The Orange Box, intalled everything and only HL2 and Lost Coast work. Everything else and I get a preparing to launch msg then 5 seconds later Vista tells me hl2.exe has stopped........

Tried reinstalling, compatability mode, older drivers, Dep is turnned off.

Anyone else have this problem?

Was passing a game retailer today and the guy was convinced you can't play this until the 19th.

Am I being thick or something - all you lot seem to have no problems?

Yes, though I don't know if the source of the problem is the same as for you. Mine crashes on Portal -- I get to the menu background with 'loading' on it, then it crashes out with that message.

I managed to fix it by forcing the resolution. In the launch options for the game I added "-width 1024 -height 768" (minus the "" of course) and that got me into the menus. I then changed the resolution back, and disabled features one-by-one until I found a setup that worked. In my case I think it was 4xAA that was causing it to fall over. 2xAA and 6xAA both worked fine.

Can't belive i have wasted a whole day on this! I can't get to the game menus no matter what I try. Thanks for the imput though.
