Hl2 Portal Tech

To tell the truth I laughed when I saw the first portals video. This is because I had just been playing Prey and half-life 2's portals look like a retaliation to a new type of FPS ingame technology. But thats just my opinion.
 
afaik portals like those have been used in games before prey though

I remember some Prey technology being demo'd waaay back when DN4E was also relatively fresh news. Remember seeing portal technology back then, albeit with less shiny graphics.
 
If you're gonna be picky about needless details, then Quake 3 did portals long before any of these games. And I've no doubt someone probably did them before then, knowing how these things go.

That said, I think the novelty with these particular portals is more that they actually utilise HL2's ace physics with them. I've not played Prey, but the portals in that don't do this do they?

I love that they're making the Portal game into more of a puzzle game, with short levels and individual problems and the like. That to me is a far better way of doing it than trying to actually implement the technology directly into Episode 2, where it would probably confuse and frustrate a large majority of the players. Because from the look of that video, it's going to be mind-bendingly weird getting the hang of it all.

With this, TF2 (good lord it's finally coming out, someone pinch me), and a longer episode with the prospect of actual storyline advancement, I'm really looking forward to Ep2's release. :)
 
there isn't much physics in prey to speak of. I can only think of one puzzle that involved physics at-all.

Portal and Prey are completely different games IMO. The only common factor being the portals which are very similar. Unfortunately prey's portals can't be embedded into walls, otherwise a lot more fun could be had with prey's dynamic portals.
