My brother is installing HL2 on his machine after his hard drive died a few months back, and it's taking ages - it's been installing (from the DVD) for over an hour now. Is this normal?

The only time I've ever installed HL2 was back when it first came out (2004, was it?), so I can't even remember how long it took. I have a vague memory of sitting reading a book while it was installing, so it must have taken a fair amount of time, but I may or may not be misremembering, so I dunno. I don't even have it on my PC atm (also had a catastrophic hard drive accident a few months ago - several, in fact) so I'll need to get round to reinstalling it too, at some point.:o

It'll depend on the speed of his drive, 1x will of course take longer. Shouldn't take that long though. Is the progress bar still moving?

maybe its unlocking the files and updating from the net....i would imagine the update is probably close to 1 gig by now.

The bar was still moving last time I asked him, so I suppose that's a good sign. :o

If it has really stopped installing, just add the game to steam and download it rather than install it.

If we could get any more than 200kbs out of our 8Mb connection, I'd happily do that. :(

Steam isn't installed/registered, so it can't be.

what os?

what programs does he have in the background?

disable AV (if it's norton, then it'll really nail the pc), disable antispyware scanning, disable system restore

It was on XP, with everything fully going in the background. No Norton, though his AV may have been scanning - I think his does regular background scans, I never even thought of it.

It's done now, though - 2 1/2 hours, he tells me, and then it proceeded to update Steam and path the game on top of it. Good old Valve. :p
