Hi guys, need ya help please! All of a sudden my pc has decided to not load windows (xp) anymore. Ive made no changes to hardware/software.

I cant get into windows/safemode/command prompt, it just restarts when it gets to a certain point. It did come up with a error once (\i386\system32\ntoskrnl.exe could not be loaded, the error code is 4)

I've tried booting off the xp cd, and it doesnt recognise the drives (prolly because I need a disc to load the scsi/raid drivers, but my pc doesnt have a floppy drive and I cant find the drivers anywhere anywhos.

So I thought i'll load vista upgrade that I got with the pc, I boot from the disc and all it says is: "cannot load setup \windows\system32\ntkrnlpa.exe is missing or corrupt."

Im kinda going round in circles with this one, any ideas appreciated!

Sounds like there's a hardware error of some sort in your machine. Have you got spare ram to try? Or get MemTest and boot off that and it will test your memory.:)

I've seen this error plenty of times before when running RAID and fixed it by using a BootCD with hard drive manufacturers tools on it (I would mention the name but it has warez on it) and scanning the drive for errors. The errors were fixed and I carried on as normal.

Alternatively if you have access to a working machine you could use nlite to slipstream the drivers you need into your windows CD allowing you to access the drives and run the recovery console/chkdsk

Ice on fire-
Hmm, well memtest has been going for almost an hour now...
There's a lot of red! So far there are 1,087,488 errors & no passes!!! Can this be right?!

Ive got 4 sticks of memory, so how do I know which ones needs replacing? It looks like all of it is naffed if the test is correct.

Thanks for the reply, soz, I wasnt very clear. Ive got a sata drive in there, but I dont have any raid array set up, it just asks for third party drivers when you first start installing windows otherwise it dosent seem to recognise the drive.

I understood what you meant, you obviously didn't understand me ;) The reason I mentioned RAID was because like having SATA a vanilla windows disk doesn't have the drivers so requires F6 on boot. By using an up to date bootcd you'll *probably* have access to error checking tools as the CD will see the SATA drive. Alternatively (or in addition to a bootcd) slipstreaming the drivers into the windows cd with nLite will mean that there's no need to press F6 on boot as the correct drivers are already on the CD :)

Having said all that.......looks like your RAM is on the blink. You overclocking at all?

Cheers for that,

Nope, not overclocking at all, the test is still going & still racking up the errors! Rubbish. Im hoping it is the memory though & nothing else because the prices are pretty good at the moment.

Well the memtest just kept on going & going finding errors. Is it worth buying new memory do you reckon, or could the error be caused by something else other than the memory being naffed?

If everything's at stock, then you need some new ram.

Fortunately, it's the cheapest component in most machines at the moment :)
