Okay...

Current system:

P4 3.2ghz HT
2GB Corsair XMS 3200
Nvidia 6800NU

Fair enough its getting on a bit now but still relatively decent. I was planning on upgrading at the end of the month to a shiny new C2D system.

That was until i noticed this yesterday, http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-137-SP

You reckon that would give the old system a bit of a lift?

How much performace increase would a new C2D system again with 2gb of decent ram and a similar PCI-E card give me? Is it enough to justify a 700quid upgrade?

Any help would be most appreciated.

Depends what you use the PC for, though there's lots of "BUY CONROE" people here, it really depends what you need from the PC.

Gaming wise, if you want to play newer games, it would overall be more beneficial to upgrade as much as the system as you can, where as if you're only playing particular games, a graphics boost might tie you over just fine.

It will be used for gaming, namely Quake Wars when its finally released.

To be honest im not one of these guys who wants to play at ridiculous resolutions, more of a competitive player ..more interested in performance than eye candy.

I guess in that case what my question really is, is how good is the conroe? Will a stock E6300 outperform my existing P4 by a noticeable amount?

The stock performance of an E6300 will be a big boost over your P4 :)

celticrobbo: I have a very similar spec to your existing system and I'm upgrading. I plan on getting a main board that will support core2 quadro, but with a E6600 for the time being. Then in 6 months time when quadro's are retailing at similar prices to what core2 are right now, then I'll sell the core2 for ~£120 and get the quadro for ~£200.
