Ok atm I'm intending on getting a 512mb 3870XT after already uhming and arring over a 3850 instead, however I've just spotted a 1gb 2900XT for a reasonable price.

Should I stay with 3870 or go for the 2900?

I know the 3870 is a lil faster than the 512mb 2900 but how much faster is the 1gb card?

The 1GB 2900XT was no quicker than the 512MB variant, although it may be able to hold enough textures for games like Crysis on V.High, it doesn't have the raw umph to actually use the data.

Secondly, if you were to want to crossfire in the future, getting hold of a 2nd card may prove tricky, they use almost twice the power of the 3870's, and they run a lot noiser and hotter.

Personally, I'd get a 3870, with a view to getting a 2nd in the new year.

If theres no real performance gain, I'll stick with the 3870 then :)

Just waiting on refund to come now, typically OcUK has run out of stock again now too lol :p

how much is the 2900xt? I would not pay more than £100 for it.

Forget the 2900XT, though the card will keep you warm in winter, it will all so cause you electricity bill to treble :p that and the fact its no better than the standard 512mb version, 3870 all the way.
