Ok guys,

Heres my setup,
Laptop x 2
MacMini
Server (Thinkcentre S50 (SFF) with 500GB HDD, 2,8ghz p4 and 1gb ram...)

I have all my pictures, music, movies, porn, files etc etc on the server, it used to have a 200gb hdd in it, then got upgraded to a 350gb and recently ive had to fit a 500gb due to increased amount of things i want to store.

Ive just connected into my server and realised i have about 50GB left of free space, ive deleted some unwanted stuff and have around 80GB free.

Its not going to be long till im going to be in need of some more space.

Please bear in mind the machine used as a server has room for only 1 hdd

Do i;
*upgrade server to 1tb, be comfortable for 6-8mths till i reliase im running out of space?
*try and bodge a 1tb drive to site outside the chassis, connected to the pc via long sata cable?
*purchase another pc (possibly made from bits from MM) with space for 4/5 drives and upgrade when they are on offer/cheap on MM?
*buy usb drives to hang off server (remember i access remotley, will this be slow?)
*your suggestion?

If you could reply i would be most grateful.

Cheers

only enough room for 1 HDD?! What sort of case is it? You could buy a "Sharkoon hard drive quickstand" (google for pictures), and sit it at the bottom of your case?

Ah sorry, I didnt read that. Would it not be wiser to buy a new case with atleast 4 hard drive support so you could keep adidng to it?

Otherwise your going to have to use external USB (or e-sata if you have a spare PCI/PCI-E slot). Which will look messy as the external 3.5" drives have a power brick.

would have to buy a whole new pc, the planar inside the server is besoke to that chassis.

external usb (would this not be slow) not sure about e-sata (i do have a spare pci)

not too worried about mess - its in the cuboard under the stairs

USB you would get about 30-35MB/s, which is fast enough because your lan is probably only 100Mbit? Although even if you had Gbit it would still be fast enough.

However if you want the extra speed then get a cheap SATA controller with e-SATA ports (about £8 or so for 2 ports).
