Just noticed a few extra thousand has appeared in one of our bank accounts from HMRC.

I am going to presume it is an error as we don't believe we are due anything however the amount is within £50 of a charge we paid earlier this year when we took over ownership of the house we live in from the Wife's father, it was stamp duty on the second property I think.

Anyone think of any reason why this would be refunded genuinely?

Obviously the wife is ringing HMRC when they open but I am curious.

It's the HMRC. You'll be punted from department to department, on hold for hours and hours, only for Doris to tell you that they can't find any indiscrepancies and that they'll get in touch if / when they know more. 2 years later when you've just had a kid, your wife is in hospital and you're unable to work due to a health complication you'll get a letter saying that they paid you £2k in error and that you have to pay it back within 48 hours or they'll come repo your house.

More likely they expect it paid as of yesterday and already be trying to push it through court despite it being their error :s

Hence my good luck.

Absolutely, 100% this.

I call them a while back to understand something. It was a complicated year for me. They answered the phone quickly and the guy looked through my account and explained it all. I was gobsmacked at how efficient it all was.

Expect a letter next year saying you underpaid tax and now you're ******. I had several helpful people nicely explain stuff to me, only for them to turn out to be complete wrong
