Why is this so hard?

Parents asked me to help them they want to access their tax returns.

The accountant handles this.... but we suspect some wrong doing and wanted to access it yourself so we can see whats going on.

I went through this and choose individual filed in all the details etc.... first then choose post office to verify identity. Cant see the point in this as at no point in using the government ID we created here has it asked for it.

Anyway all we have achieved is creating a new Government ID. We want to access EXISTING account not create a new one.

Anyone have any ideas?

Do we have to call them?

Spent hours doing this last weekend and got nowhere.

You're best off ringing them.

We've been having problems with the website and government gateway all week at work trying to submit our benefits and tax returns. Still not sorted.

If your accountant is acting as an agent, and doing the submission on your behalf, then it is not a simple matter of logging in to see what he has submitted.
They systems most accountants use are setup differently, and hmrc website will not display the return.
The accountant should have issued your folks with a printed or electronic form of the entire submitted document in addition to a computation report of their tax return.

This should be all you need for investigating if the figures are right or wrong.

Either Call HMRC or ask for a full copy of the return from your accountant - your paying him to do a job, and he should be supplying you with a copy of the submission.

Also make sure your 100% sure that something is wrong before you accuse someone of wrongdoing!
