My wife and I are thinking about going away in the first couple of weeks in October.

She wants something relaxing which I am fine with. I would really love to hit New York for some shopping though. She is fine with NYC for 3 days or so but would like something else relaxing on top of that.

Anyone know of anything we could do from New York that would be nice and chilled? Neither of us drive so it needs be somewhere we can get to by public transport and enjoy without a car.

I have no advice other then use trip advisor to check advice on good places. Just remember to take reviews with a pinch of salt so to speak. As some people will flame good places because the bell boy wasn't quick enough as will others will go mental at a standard 4 star sayings its like heaven because they are used to butlins haha.

I went to New York last June and loved it. I would go for longer than 3 nights though if it's your first time going, as there's a lot to do and see in NY and 3 nights just isnt enough in my opinion.

- Statue of Liberty/ Elis Island
- Empire State Building or Rockafella Centre
- Times Square
- Walk the Brooklyn Bridge
- Shopping
- Little Italy/ China Town
- Tour of the Boroughs
- Boat ride around Manhattan Island
- Broadway Show
- Loads of good bars and restaurants
- Wall Street/ Financial District
- Ground Zero
- Central Park

As for something relaxing afterwards - there are some really nice places around up state NY/ Long Island area that have beaches and stuff, but it might be a bit cold in October. Could always fly down to Florida/ Miami for a bit of sun and general bumming around?

wait... You want to go to NYC and do some shopping but your wife wants to leave before you

I call shenanigans, what wifey would want to stop shopping in NYC before there partner? :p

Echo above, I did a Friday to Wednesday, 4 nights and 5 long days.

Only just enough time to relax in the evenings, we were very busy during the day. Compounded by the fact it was thanks giving weekend (2010) and sales galore at shops.

My girlfriend was quite happy to shop for nearly 2+ days, though we did manage to do the sights as well :)

The stuff we did:

- Shopping....even went to an outlet, around 1 hour coach ride away but very cheap and worth the effort.

- Statue of Liberty
- Empire State Building
- Broadway show
- Rockefeller Centre
- Central Park
- Cinema (huge IMAX screen near Central Park)
- Little Italy & China Town
- Times Square

We stayed in a Holiday Inn between Times Square and 5th Avenue, excellent location. Not the cheapest but not the most expensive either.

As for going somewhere else afterwards, why not drive to Washington DC? Or as suggested above, fly to say New Orleans?

It just depends on your buget & time :)

We have both been to NYC before.

Neither of us drive so it needs be somewhere we can get to by public transport and enjoy without a car.

WE both are happy to do some shopping. We are both fans of the Outlet Village at Woodbury Common. (1hr from NYC)

It is our first holiday this year so we do want to relax.

New Yorkers often go to Long Island (beaches) or Atlantic City (Casino's + other entertainment.)

Edit: October might be good for the New England leaf tours! ie see all the autumn tree colours. It very big over there. Bound to be some tours.
